Gosh. I\u2019ve been wanting to write blog posts for a while, like at least do an update before flying off. But who knew life threw me a curve ball and here I am, on my hotel room bed in San Diego, typing away on my fancy schmecy, brand new magic keyboard 2 for iPad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. I did it. I take it as reward for finishing the first draft of my grant proposal\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What grant proposal you ask? Yeah, a grant call opened up like two weeks before we were due to leave, and it\u2019s probably like the only grant that I\u2019m eligible to apply for? So well. Yup. It wasn\u2019t about the paper this time\u2026 But trying to write a grant proposal. And it was hard\u2026 Obviously my first time, and I barely had much motivation to write. And of course there was stuff to be packed, last minute things to do – for the trip and for work\u2026 Ultimately I just didn\u2019t have the time\/capacity to do an update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight was alright, but very, very long. 15.5 hours from SG to SF! And there was quite a bit of turbulence too\u2026 Ok not *that* bad, but for the first time ever the whole of yesterday I was still feeling the movement when I was sitting down. Over that now, but boy I was surprised that first time that happened. It happens if I\u2019ve been in the sea or on a boat yes, but plane? That\u2019s a first. Flight was COLD. Didn\u2019t help that I bought a new jacket – new as in never worn before – on the flight, and didn\u2019t realise just how thin that jacket was. Yup. I was freezing. Jacket was bought online like 2 years ago but covid ya know? And with the SG weather I don\u2019t wear jackets in Singapore basically. So.. Yeah. Didn\u2019t do much on the flight\u2026 I loaded youtube videos and Amazon prime videos but only watched like 3 of \u2018em. With how little space there was in economy, I couldn\u2019t open my ipad and have it docked on the keyboard folio, so that makes typing blog posts out of the question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole flight was pretty much always in \u2018night mode\u2019 to help with the jet lag, and I did want to try sleeping so I didn\u2019t cube either. In flight entertainment wasn\u2019t all that to my liking as well unfortunately\u2026 I\u2019m not really a movies person, because I hate how I\u2019m just keep thinking about the movie the entire day after watching\u2026 But I did end up \u2018watching\u2019 Titanic (neighbour was watching that) and the Passenger (someone in front was watching that) through other ppl\u2019s screens for quite a bit. The passenger has quite an interesting plot, I went to read up on imdb\u2026 But I don\u2019t want to watch it\u2026 It\u2019s like\u2026 Part scary and\u2026 Idk. I just don\u2019t like movies in general ok? Even dramas are kinda meh. I\u2019m ok with documentary. But give me variety tv. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh yes. I searched up IMDB. During the flight. Free wifi by Singapore Airlines, that was really amazing, especially for long haul flights like mine. Yeah it\u2019s not fast, I doubt you can game, and streaming is blocked, and it\u2019s really not fast so websites and images takes a while to load\u2026. And some stretches during the flight there was no connection at all\u2026 But I could msg all right (when there was connection that is, and mostly it was alright), and I could send photos even, though that does take a little longer\u2026. Oh yeah, I\u2019m travelling with my colleague. Two girls, we both picked aisle seats and it\u2019s a 3 columns (or rows, depending on how you look at it) of seats, 3 seats per block\u2026 We were in the middle block and on different sides, with a guy (a stranger) stuck in the middle. Poor guy lol. But me and my colleague were messaging each other on whatsapp during the flight lol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t bring my switch along on this trip though\u2026 I mean, it\u2019s a work trip after all and with blogging and all, I don\u2019t think there\u2019ll be much time left for me to play. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

First class folks still get Hagen Daz, saw a tray of it brought to the front. No complains though, I\u2019m glad they are supporting a local company. I also did kinda over eat (also stomach wasn\u2019t really well) and might also have been motion sickness and puked out a bunch of it\u2026 Heh. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Even during meal times, they kept the cabin fairly dim. This was dinner\/breakfast.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Chicken with rice or eggs and sausage? I picked chicken with rice, which turns out to be nasi lemak. Thinking about it after the fact, yeah that was definitely breakfast. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Not bad at all, I enjoyed it and even ate a lot of the chilli.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As we got closer to the destination, the cabin got progressively brighter to simulate the sun rise. Since we would land at 10am, and there\u2019s a whooping 15 hour time difference between SG and SF, I definitely appreciate the efforts to help minimise jet lag!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the long and torturous flight was over. Landed at SF international airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We had about 3+ hours for layover before flying to San Diego where the conference actually is\u2026 I thought that would be ample time, but who knew we had to clear customs, collect our baggage, re-check in baggage and go through security again\u2026 And grab lunch since the next flight had no meal service. We did have time to eat lunch so it wasn\u2019t that bad, but it was still quite rushed! I was definitely worried that we wouldn\u2019t have enough time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t get to sleep much at all on the first flight, like maybe 3 seperate 1 hour naps, and maybe 2 hours before landing? I did have a good sleep for the entire duration of the 1 hour 20ish mins connecting flight though. Just completely knocked out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards it\u2019s just Lyft to the hotel\u2026 Uber eats for dinner\u2026 And then grant writing hell. I slept for like 4 – 5 hours\u2026 Woke up around 12:45am, tried to go back to sleep but couldn\u2019t for an hour, and decided to just start grant writing. Definitely way more productive and motivated\u2026 Wrote a lot by the time morning rolled around. Write, eat Uber eats left overs (we ordered chipotle), write, rinse and repeat.. All the way till I was mostly done by 1pm (did try to take a nap in between but couldn\u2019t sleep). Then I called it a day and went to have a lovely sleep all the way till 4pm, where upon we decided to go out to the mall to grab some dinner\u2026 Before heading back to continue writing. I finished up my first draft earlier\u2026 While my poor colleague still writing right now. But hey, she\u2019s already on her second draft, whereas I\u2019m on my first draft and awaiting comments from my boss and colleague\u2026 She pretty much had to rewrite everything after the first round of comments\u2026 I hope I don\u2019t have to\u2026 At least not rewrite *that* much! >< It\u2019s definitely a learning experience, but still, it\u2019s a painful one! In comparison, I can type \u2018nonsense\u2019 like a million times faster (this blog).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Went to Fashion Valley for some shopping and dinner. I just picked this costume it was closer, only found out from the Lyft driver on the way that it\u2019s a pretty darn upscale place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But oh well. I did find an Apple store, not a very big one, but I did get my keyboard. Also found the Lululemon store 10mins before closing and got the stuff for my friend. Mission accomplished!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Colleague picked a place for dinner. Turns out to be a food truck some ways from Fashion Valley. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But hey, the food was good and it was cheap. I got two fish tacos – loved it, and a shrimp taco. Shrimp taco was less impressive, the shrimp was like kinda overcooked. The deep fried fish was on the saltier side but very soft and I loved it. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

So it\u2019s been solely mexican food since we landed in SD\u2026 I\u2019m liking the keyboard so far. Been using the trackpad A LOT, I guess the fact that I\u2019ve been only using the trackpad on my work laptop when I\u2019ve been writing the proposal at home, and now in SD helped. I\u2019m using to using a trackpad again. Still need to get used to some of the stuff, but overall it\u2019s great. The key location and stuff is a bit different from the folio since it has to make space for the trackpad and all, but I\u2019m almost all used to it now. Somehow I get times when I accidentally misclick the trackpad on my laptop and the cursor ends up going elsewhere – happened quite a bit in fact. But none so far with the iPad. Not bad at all. The tiny size of the left and right arrow keys throws me off\u2026 But I\u2019m loving how the corners of the keyboard and rounded and smooth and doesn\u2019t bite into my hands\/body. The \u2018floating\u2019 mount Also means that I won\u2019t trap the iPad too tightly between my fat tummy and knees, causing the entire ipad to come crumbing down from the folio. That and the much more rounded and no longer painful edge alone makes it worth it\u2026 I think. And of course having an additional passthrough port on the LEFT is great too, because when I\u2019m on my desk at home, my cable will be coming in from the left, and even with a 3m long cable, the cable would be bent, so having ports on both sides is great. The backlit keys are good too\u2026 Like there in the hotel room, it\u2019s kinda dim and I can see the keys. Heck, my bloody stupid work laptop doesn\u2019t even have backlit keys! I had to turn on the lights to type properly at 2am last night\u2026 Yeah I\u2019m not that great of a touch typer and it\u2019s just\u2026 I just need that visual cue to find where to put my hands and all? Yeah I\u2019m a very visual and spatial person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yup\u2026 Now I definitely regret not buying the magic keyboard from the start. This is so enjoyable to use\u2026 I can\u2019t see myself wanting to go back to using the folio? Yeah this is indeed heavier than the folio but\u2026 After carrying both my ipad and my absurdly heavy work laptop, plus charger and mouse around for a while\u2026 (over 8 kg)\u2026 What\u2019s a few hundred grams more lol! Of course the very nicely padded pacsafe bag makes it so easy to carry as well, though the bag itself is really sturdy and that adds to the weight! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
