New year resolutions

2024 goals!

2024 Messy Desker resolutions

Ok, trying to type this out on Pages and then I’ll see how I can get it exported/imported to wordpress. At worst copy and paste will have to do. (Update: Yeah, copy and paste it was)

But ok. I’ve started following sketchesnscrubs on youtube and I’ll just her Artist Reset template for this.

I’ll divide it into two categories I guess.

First for the more ‘art’ stuff. Like watercolors, drawing etc.

Second for the more ‘writing’ stuff. Like journaling, pen-paling, blogging.

Highlights of last year:

I managed to get some art done towards the end of the year, found an awesome community, fell deep in the watercolor rabbit hole. But also did a lot, a lot of watercolor.

Unfortunately I didn’t get any penpaling done. I typed up a generic – what happened in 2023 – letter to send to my penpals, but I still want to read their previous letter and reply to that. But didn’t get around to doing so. I did at least start some ‘scrapbooking’ as I call it at the end of last year though, and watching my notebook bulk up with the bits and blobs I stuck into it has been really satisfying.

Because of just how screwed up work got, I didn’t have any expectations or anything in terms of art… But I did wish I could have replied to my penpals at the end of the year… But I just got sucked into doing art and didn’t end up writing any physical letters. Heck, even the ‘digital letter’ will still need to be printed out and sent physically. And I have not done so yet – gotta add in my end of the year covid story now.

Now for things that I want to do this year:

I want to keep less stuff on my chair, and desk… Ideally those two will always be free of things so that I can pop on to my chair and do art anytime. VS now where I have to carry the piles of stuff over to my bed first before I could do art. Same with writing…. I need more space to be able to write. Which is a huge barrier in why I haven’t been able to write… Like it’s just troublesome and more of a mental barrier than anything else. But still a barrier nonetheless. Already some stuff I’ve done like having the water cup always out and almost always filled with water (clean or dirty) made it easier for me to get along with the painting. But that kinda made me want to paint rather than do anything else, like writing, or drawing… Use other forms of art. That and the absolute lack of space on my desk makes that motivation even less. And things are not looking any better now. I’ve got crumpled up but unused serviettes on the desk – from restaurants in Genting. I could use them to dab away paint and stuff but it’s one big mess. There’s all the drugs (well, medication) from the various doctor visits as well as over the counter drugs and lozenges… And lots of trinkets and cups of brushes and pens… And so much stuff.

Do more color pencil stuff and use the supplies that I stress bought (retail therapy) over the black friday sales in 2022. Shop my own supplies basically. A lot of the stuff is still brand new in box. With the wrapper and all still intact. So yeah. That has to change… I’ll like to aim for at least ‘something artsy done every weekend’. No idea how busy work will get and all. Presumably it’ll just be a regular year but who knows. Ideally I’d like to do something artsy everyday. And I would definitely like to move towards that. Maybe even like a 5 minutes quick sketch would be good, and would certainly count. But to be more realistic, just something artsy once a week would be good.

On the writing front, definitely would love to write a lot more often. Both blog wise and penpal wise. And maybe start writing more journal entries again. I don’t think I’m gonna force myself to write in my journal everyday like I once did. But I would like to write again. I didn’t buy any journal for 2024… No hobonichi for the first time since I fell into the fountain pen hobby. But I didn’t even touch my 2023 hobonichi. Don’t think I did the 2022 one either. Those are NOT going to waste, it’s still good paper and I will still use them. But I won’t be making myself write everyday. Write I will. But not like an everyday thing. Oh yeah, you mean the hobonichi techo is meant to be a planner? Sorry, I’ve always used it as a journal. See I work in the lab. When I’m busy in the lab, what I do tomorrow depends on the results of what happens today. I don’t even know what is gonna happen two days later, what use is a planner?

What else do I want to do hmm…

Yeah nothing much. Just slowly going through the stuff I already have, and use them. Toss whatever can’t be used, donate/giveaway stuff I don’t want… And keep writing and doing art. I don’t have anything specific in mind like ‘learn how to draw nice portraits’ or anything of that sort. I do want to experiment with gouache and try out all the weird fancy supplies I got but I don’t have any specific skills that I want to gain in mind.

That’s about it for now I guess. Yeah definitely nothing big or groundbreaking… I mean, what’s the point of setting unrealistic expectations that you know you won’t be able to fulfil? For the satisfaction of writing something down in your new year’s resolutions? Nah. I don’t see a point in doing that.

I have other new year resolutions to think about… Like my goals in cubing etc. As usual I will have my 1 book a month reading goal I guess… I read a lot. But mostly junk webnovels lol. So those don’t count unfortunately.

Alright. That’s all for now I guess. Till next time!

What a way to end the year…

Gosh. It’s 2024 now. I’m supposed to be back at work. But nope. Sick. Still sick. Kinda been sick the entire Dec.

We did go to Genting over the Xmas weekend, and I did post about it over in my other blog here. But what happened after that was… I came back and started wheezing that night we returned to Sg. Not too bad. It only happened whenever I lie down. Oh yeah, epic cough started on the way back to sg… And it just constantly felt like there was something stuck in my chest/throat but wouldn’t go away, and no amount of coughing made a difference. Next morning it was the same. Went to the doc and got an asthma inhaler.

Then after coming back from the doctor the fever started. And the chills. And then the throwing up.

Found out the next morning that sis was covid positive. Yeah. All that was the covid. How much of it was bronchitis? Probably just the cough and wheezing?

The fever broke after the first day – before I knew I actually had covid… That was Thursday. Friday I tested positive, as did later everyone else in the family. So plans to meet my cousin who came back from Thailand were obviously cancelled.

I didn’t test myself today, but my dad is not positive anymore, his ART test lines were already pretty faint yesterday. Mine was still strong. Not as strong as the first day I tested, but still there. And gosh the coughing. The coughing got pretty bad last night. It hasn’t been a week since the wheezing either and I’m still feeling that tightness/lump right in the middle of my chest. At least there’s been no more wheezing, but I have been taking like four puffs on the inhaler everyday. For a week the doc says.

At least I haven’t been throwing up for like 2 days now… It was like the start of last year all over again when I started throwing up everything I ate and didn’t eat. Like air and gastic juice. Still not eating much now, but at least I’m not throwing up either which is a great plus. I’m wondering when to go back to work. Technically I don’t have an MC so I should be back. But what’s the point if I’m gonna be coughing my lungs out…? And still covid positive on top of that. Nah. I will go in for the post doc interview on Friday though. At least I think that is in person. Guess I’ll do the ART test tmr morning and see how that goes… And maybe message my boss or something.

What saddens me was that I was on leave!!! All those wasted days off spent being sick. And it’s not like I could cancel those days off either, because I can’t carry over any more days into 2024. Sigh. So stuff like my letter writing… I just didn’t write any because the idea of coughing covid particles onto the letters and sending them to people does not appeal to me. I tried to do some art on the second day but just didn’t end up feeling up to it. Did some swatches of the Masha watercolors and they look gorgeous, but that’s pretty much it. After that I just stayed in bed watching youtube, reading webnovels, and playing mobile games. And coughing. Oh and naps. Sooo tired. I took a nap this morning after waking up and slept till like 12+pm. Just so exhausted. Been taking like 1-2 naps a day and a lot of times when reading I would find myself dropping off to sleep, but after actually getting ready to sleep (like turning off the lights and taking off my specs) I would feel awake again.

So my plan to do art everyday that I stayed home obviously got disrupted… Sigh. So many things got disrupted. And now I’m feeling sleepy again…

I’d like to do more art in the new year though.. But I’ll leave that for a separate post. This Jetpack/wordpress app is also really annoying the shi*t out of me. It won’t auto scroll to reveal the new lines, ok fine. But sometimes it just gets stuck there and you can’t even scroll up to see the latest line even if you tried. Either way both are hellya annoying! So done with it… Having to keep scrolling up every 30 seconds or so is very, very disruptive too. Arghs. I wonder if the Apple Pages app supports publishing to wordpress… Or just exporting to html is all I’d need actually. So annoying! Ok, that’s all for this post I guess. Till the next one!

Opps, I did it again

Guess who went crazy on Black Friday and bought a bunch of Roman Szmal and Micheal Harding watercolors?

That’s right…

I also got some of everything 31 purplefish had to offer.

And the best part? So I placed the large Jackson’s order on Friday… And on Sunday I found that I had a set of 12 full pans from like the art snacks inktober box like… last year? Or was it the year before? I didn’t order this year because the shipping was ridiculous and I was too lazy to do the whole ezbuy mail forwarding thing. Yeah it was last year. Just checked my account. But clearly with the paper mess and all… I didn’t have time to use any of the stuff inside. And I wasn’t really into watercolors then and barely knew any professional brands… So I looked at the pack of 12 Roman Szmal paints with suspicion… And like everything else I didn’t have time for, they stayed in the clear bubble pouch it came in and went…. Well it just laid around somewhere in the room until I cleared out a cupboard for some art stuff and it went in there and never saw the light of day again until this week.

I was NOT expecting them to be wrapped in foil paper like this, literally looking like chocolates. In a cardboard box and a plastic tray too. The bad news is I don’t have space in my palette for these… Oh wait, I could open a new palette and put them there in the mean time… But for now they are still in that cardboard box. I will now have some repeats thanks to this… >< I also have no idea how to store them all when they come.. Yeah… I bought too many… Went to taobao and got some ideas but haven’t made the purchase yet. I should buy them asap, otherwise I will have plenty of paints and no way to store them!

Dead…

That’s what I am… Or what my bank account is. Zero. Kosong. 零.

Why?

I fell in love with granulating watercolors.

And also love trying out all sorts of different brands of professional grade watercolors…

And different brands of handmade watercolors.

And those granulating watercolors especially.

Oh so beautiful….

In love….

Bank account is not loving it though.

Gosh. I so very much want a whole lot of Daniel Smith Primatek watercolors. Oh so very beautiful!

And MashasWatercolors? I WANT THEM ALL!

And I also want to try beam paints and oceanpaper… All while I’m waiting for my order from 31purplefish to arrive AND I still want to get more during her black friday drop…

Yeah… I’m a little bit crazy I know….

Watercolors, watercolours, and more watercolorssss!

I’ve been on a watercolor roll lately. Lots and lots of watercolors.

Both in terms of the buying and spending, and the actual doing.

Been just painting a lot of stuff lately. Like 8 or 10 watercolors paintings each day over the weekend… Loose florals, some landscapes… Just having some fun.

And as for the purchases… I have a palette full of Holbein watercolors now. Like 44 watercolors, according to my google sheet.

I’ve got a bunch of winsor and newtons as well… And a whole lot of daniel smiths… Both their extra fine watercolors and their luminance series of fun watercolors. Found that just adding a bit of shiny stuff here and there makes the painting really interesting and so… Yeah I just ended up buying a whole bunch. Visited Straits Art twice and ordered online once… Yeah. I’m deep down the rabbit hole for sure.

Also just paid like 70 bucks in gst and handling fees for a lot of schminke watercolors from jackson art… Not too sure if it was worth it compared to just buying from straits art but… Yeah… Just… felt like I’ve been there a bit too much in just like… two weeks or something so… Yeah. THEN afterwards I got very tempted by michelle harding watercolors, also sold on jackson art… Added a whole lot of them to my cart already. But for now I’m just holding my horses and putting that purchase on hold. Maybe after the renovation. Maybe never. I don’t know. I have so much professional watercolors and they will already last me years and years. I want more of course, but obviously I don’t need more.

And on top of that I ordered a whole lot of handmade watercolors… Including a whole year of watercolor preorders from boulder colors… So… Yeah. I do actually have more than enough for a long long time to come.

My holbein watercolors
My QOR starter set of 12 colors

Now my daniel smiths are in the same pan as the holbein, and that’s just the regular watercolors. The shiny ones have been upgraded to the palette for up to 24 colors. Neither are filled yet, allowing for some bit of expansion. But not that much. I want an interference green for the D.S…. Not sure if they just didn’t have it in stock or something…

Kinda want some more holbeins too… I want colors more similar to an olive green. And I want like a proper primary red.

Hmmm… Yeah. I’m at a conference now so I’m actually in novena. Which is fairly close to orchard road. Well. Very close. I’m wondering if I should drop by later or something… But that’s also making it hard for me to concentrate on my blog post writing… So I guess I shall end it here…

But so far I’m really loving the DS and Holbein paints… W&N is good too. QOR, haven’t liked them that much so far. Got two tubes of schimnke and I loved them too… So yeah…

3 weeks…

Is neither too long nor too short. It went by in a flash really, those 3 weeks of workcation. The first 6 days were honestly more work than anything else. With the proposal writing… It was basically writing through the night or till the wee hours of the morning, then sleeping a bit, going to the conference… Rinse and repeat. We barely stepped out of the hotel room in San Diego really, because it was just writing and writing and writing. And dinner would be Uber eats… And the leftovers I would have for supper and throughout the night as I’m writing. It’s been too long since I did any sort of academic writing…

Typing on my new (ok, about a month old) iPad keyboard now… And I didn’t hear anything about a new one being announced yet so I guess I’m good. Probably next year says the rumor mills? By then I would have enjoyed this for a while. It is nice though, the key travel in this keyboard. But yeah no it IS heavy though! No matter what the weight still sucks. Especially if I also bring my work laptop back, as I did yesterday just in case… Also because I forgot that I did find an app alternative to mendeley… So I don’t actually need my work laptop to read journal papers. Oh wells. I don’t think I’ll touch my work laptop at all this weekend. But that’s alright… I took off on Monday, my birthday! Yay! Pack my table a bit, get some art going maybe? Oh yes, all my new neon watercolors have arrived. By last Sat in fact. Awesome. And my empty watercolor pans are supposed to be delivered today. I really can’t wait. Hope it’s sooner rather than later really… I want to make my Holbein pans and stuff and I’m so excited for that stuff to arrive.

I’m sort of used to the trackpad just existing on this keyboard now. Not like really use it *that* much… But I also learned some of the gestures and what not… But yeah overall… I guess I’ll indeed be going magic trackpad in the future… Heavy weight be damned lol.

Overall thoughts on the trip… Well… We more or less finished writing the proposal by the end of the San Diego trip… So we could mostly just have fun in Europe. 3 hours flight delay on the flight from LA to Paris though so that sucked. That flight by KLM sucked. It was so fucking hot and stuffy. The first flight from SG to San Francisco sucked too. I was freezing on the flight – it was sooooo bloody cold, and my jacket was too thin. And it was long… over 15 hours… My butt hurt from sitting down for so long, even though I made regular trips to the toilet to get some blood circulation going and all… But well, no matter what the flights were just a one day thing. It sucked in the moment but you just grind your teeth and bear with it for a few hours and it’s a done deal. The flight back from AMS was a lot shorter than – well about 12 hours… And it wasn’t overly cold or hot. Ok a little on the warm side, and I was sitting next to a fairly large guy…. But it was ok overall. I was starving at one point and they took forever to start serving snacks, but overall it was quite ok. My knees did feel like they swelled up a lot though… Again from the inactivity I guess… And carrying my luggages from Paris to Brussels and then Amsterdam… Yeah my knee did give way once when carrying my luggage down from the train. It’s not even that heavy, my stuff this time. 34kg in two check in luggages. And then a probably 10 ish kg bagpack. That’s way lesser than what I had when I came back from Japan. But I’m also older, heavier, and less fit so… Yeah.

I definitely spent way too much on this trip. Ahhh which reminds me I need to sort out all the $$$ claiming for all the work expenses. Mostly the conference registration fee and hotels. And also some food, transport, and the poster printing. Yeah. Food in Europe was good, mostly. But expensive. And also a lot. I mean, when you’re greedy and order a started and a main and a beer… Yeah that’s a lot of food… And I bought back lots of chocolates and cheese… And of course a bunch of art supplies too. Haven’t actually dug into those art supplies yet… Yeah. That’s what I gotta do this weekend.. Maybe I’ll read two papers and then do some art or something…

Speaking of which, I slept till 11:30am this morning lol! It’s a Friday and I decided to work from home… I woke up during the night at like 4ish, took really long to get back to sleep, woke up at 7am… And then the next time I knew it, it was 11:30am! I was NOT intending to wake up so late for sure. But the trip has been really exhausting and even though it’s a whole week since I’m back, there’s probably still some jet lag and what not… Also. Fever. Not sure why but I got a fever on Sunday evening. Took some panadol and it went down the next morning. Monday was back to work day and I felt alright. But on Tuesday evening I was feverish again… Slight fever both times. And that slight fever lasted till Wednesday morning… But I had stuff to finish up at work so I went to work anyway… Felt a bit tired and a little off in the morning but not that much… And I was feeling quite ok in the afternoon, but still felt a bit feverish. Yesterday (Thurs) I felt ok. Until when I woke up at like 3 or 4am during the night and I felt feverish, but temp was just 36.5 ish and normal for me so… Yeah. Not sure what’s happening. Dengue? I did get pangs of pain in my knee on Sunday. But that could be just my knees being bad from the trip/flight. And my knees hurt quite a bit too, like aches and stuff. Then on Wednesday my right wrist/forearm hurt so much, I took out my tape to tape it up. But again, that could just be from carrying all that stuff on the trip. Just a delayed reaction… No headaches or anything else so… I’m just putting it down to being tired from the trip and that’s why I stayed home today…

Pelikan hub tmr! I’m looking forward to it lots! Yeah our hub master swapped the date to tmr to get a cheaper venue. Saturday works for me too so that’s great. Just read the email from Olivia (our hub master) earlier and that got me so excited. Looking forward to it! Alright. I guess that’s all for now. We might be hearing back from the editors tmr morning and I hope it’s good news… :X After all, coming back from the trip I’ve been working yet on more figure edits, but for the patent filing this time. I really want this to be over asap so that we can move on and do other stuff. More stuff. Yeah… And I want a break… I want to sleep… I want to just slack at home for a week…

I want to play with all my art supplies basically…

It’s coming to an end…

All good things come to an end… And we are at the last leg, last two days of the trip. Well. One day. The conference day two tmr. And then on Thurs it’s just headed to the airport in the morning… Last two nights.

I definitely wanted to blog more on this trip. Write more in my diary too… But didn’t get much time for both. I did write in my journal a little, but as a result there’s no time for blogging.

It’s been a fun trip, but very tiring. Spent like crazy too, mostly on food… Food is so expensive here, eating in restaurants… But yeah overall, I had fun. Bought lots too. Chocolates, museum souvenirs, art supplies… Even a few fountain pens.

I’ll definitely slowly blog more when I’m back… Slowly I guess.. Yeah. For now, it’s conference 2 day 1 and I’m sleepy again…

Oh oh oh FINALLY!

Gosh. I’ve been wanting to write blog posts for a while, like at least do an update before flying off. But who knew life threw me a curve ball and here I am, on my hotel room bed in San Diego, typing away on my fancy schmecy, brand new magic keyboard 2 for iPad.

Yeah. I did it. I take it as reward for finishing the first draft of my grant proposal…

What grant proposal you ask? Yeah, a grant call opened up like two weeks before we were due to leave, and it’s probably like the only grant that I’m eligible to apply for? So well. Yup. It wasn’t about the paper this time… But trying to write a grant proposal. And it was hard… Obviously my first time, and I barely had much motivation to write. And of course there was stuff to be packed, last minute things to do – for the trip and for work… Ultimately I just didn’t have the time/capacity to do an update.

Flight was alright, but very, very long. 15.5 hours from SG to SF! And there was quite a bit of turbulence too… Ok not *that* bad, but for the first time ever the whole of yesterday I was still feeling the movement when I was sitting down. Over that now, but boy I was surprised that first time that happened. It happens if I’ve been in the sea or on a boat yes, but plane? That’s a first. Flight was COLD. Didn’t help that I bought a new jacket – new as in never worn before – on the flight, and didn’t realise just how thin that jacket was. Yup. I was freezing. Jacket was bought online like 2 years ago but covid ya know? And with the SG weather I don’t wear jackets in Singapore basically. So.. Yeah. Didn’t do much on the flight… I loaded youtube videos and Amazon prime videos but only watched like 3 of ‘em. With how little space there was in economy, I couldn’t open my ipad and have it docked on the keyboard folio, so that makes typing blog posts out of the question.

The whole flight was pretty much always in ‘night mode’ to help with the jet lag, and I did want to try sleeping so I didn’t cube either. In flight entertainment wasn’t all that to my liking as well unfortunately… I’m not really a movies person, because I hate how I’m just keep thinking about the movie the entire day after watching… But I did end up ‘watching’ Titanic (neighbour was watching that) and the Passenger (someone in front was watching that) through other ppl’s screens for quite a bit. The passenger has quite an interesting plot, I went to read up on imdb… But I don’t want to watch it… It’s like… Part scary and… Idk. I just don’t like movies in general ok? Even dramas are kinda meh. I’m ok with documentary. But give me variety tv.

Oh yes. I searched up IMDB. During the flight. Free wifi by Singapore Airlines, that was really amazing, especially for long haul flights like mine. Yeah it’s not fast, I doubt you can game, and streaming is blocked, and it’s really not fast so websites and images takes a while to load…. And some stretches during the flight there was no connection at all… But I could msg all right (when there was connection that is, and mostly it was alright), and I could send photos even, though that does take a little longer…. Oh yeah, I’m travelling with my colleague. Two girls, we both picked aisle seats and it’s a 3 columns (or rows, depending on how you look at it) of seats, 3 seats per block… We were in the middle block and on different sides, with a guy (a stranger) stuck in the middle. Poor guy lol. But me and my colleague were messaging each other on whatsapp during the flight lol.

A whole bunch of photos coming in, click to see larger photos, and explanations/stories in the caption.

We had about 3+ hours for layover before flying to San Diego where the conference actually is… I thought that would be ample time, but who knew we had to clear customs, collect our baggage, re-check in baggage and go through security again… And grab lunch since the next flight had no meal service. We did have time to eat lunch so it wasn’t that bad, but it was still quite rushed! I was definitely worried that we wouldn’t have enough time.

I didn’t get to sleep much at all on the first flight, like maybe 3 seperate 1 hour naps, and maybe 2 hours before landing? I did have a good sleep for the entire duration of the 1 hour 20ish mins connecting flight though. Just completely knocked out.

Afterwards it’s just Lyft to the hotel… Uber eats for dinner… And then grant writing hell. I slept for like 4 – 5 hours… Woke up around 12:45am, tried to go back to sleep but couldn’t for an hour, and decided to just start grant writing. Definitely way more productive and motivated… Wrote a lot by the time morning rolled around. Write, eat Uber eats left overs (we ordered chipotle), write, rinse and repeat.. All the way till I was mostly done by 1pm (did try to take a nap in between but couldn’t sleep). Then I called it a day and went to have a lovely sleep all the way till 4pm, where upon we decided to go out to the mall to grab some dinner… Before heading back to continue writing. I finished up my first draft earlier… While my poor colleague still writing right now. But hey, she’s already on her second draft, whereas I’m on my first draft and awaiting comments from my boss and colleague… She pretty much had to rewrite everything after the first round of comments… I hope I don’t have to… At least not rewrite *that* much! >< It’s definitely a learning experience, but still, it’s a painful one! In comparison, I can type ‘nonsense’ like a million times faster (this blog).

More photos coming up…

So it’s been solely mexican food since we landed in SD… I’m liking the keyboard so far. Been using the trackpad A LOT, I guess the fact that I’ve been only using the trackpad on my work laptop when I’ve been writing the proposal at home, and now in SD helped. I’m using to using a trackpad again. Still need to get used to some of the stuff, but overall it’s great. The key location and stuff is a bit different from the folio since it has to make space for the trackpad and all, but I’m almost all used to it now. Somehow I get times when I accidentally misclick the trackpad on my laptop and the cursor ends up going elsewhere – happened quite a bit in fact. But none so far with the iPad. Not bad at all. The tiny size of the left and right arrow keys throws me off… But I’m loving how the corners of the keyboard and rounded and smooth and doesn’t bite into my hands/body. The ‘floating’ mount Also means that I won’t trap the iPad too tightly between my fat tummy and knees, causing the entire ipad to come crumbing down from the folio. That and the much more rounded and no longer painful edge alone makes it worth it… I think. And of course having an additional passthrough port on the LEFT is great too, because when I’m on my desk at home, my cable will be coming in from the left, and even with a 3m long cable, the cable would be bent, so having ports on both sides is great. The backlit keys are good too… Like there in the hotel room, it’s kinda dim and I can see the keys. Heck, my bloody stupid work laptop doesn’t even have backlit keys! I had to turn on the lights to type properly at 2am last night… Yeah I’m not that great of a touch typer and it’s just… I just need that visual cue to find where to put my hands and all? Yeah I’m a very visual and spatial person.

Yup… Now I definitely regret not buying the magic keyboard from the start. This is so enjoyable to use… I can’t see myself wanting to go back to using the folio? Yeah this is indeed heavier than the folio but… After carrying both my ipad and my absurdly heavy work laptop, plus charger and mouse around for a while… (over 8 kg)… What’s a few hundred grams more lol! Of course the very nicely padded pacsafe bag makes it so easy to carry as well, though the bag itself is really sturdy and that adds to the weight!

Alright, that’s all for now. Till next time!

Folk art?

What the heck is folk art?

What kind of style is that? I’ve seen stuff by indigenous tribes and all, but depending on which culture… It’s all really different… So I when I saw the folk art that Mira Byler did, it was completely new to me. It’s definitely not usual style… But hey, it looks fun and is easy to do… And I wanted to try out my holbien acrylic gouache so…

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with the oldest stuff I did that’s unposted, and then get to the gouache later.

Remember I said that I got the Uni Emott fineliners? Well, I happened to watch this video by Shibasaki and hence the reason why I doodled a fish. I really like that rough layer style he did… Yes I do now have that coupy-pen ordered… I think I did have some of those as a kid, but it wasn’t a staple for sure. Yeah I could do the same with color pencils and all, and ya all know I already have a ton of colors pencils (ok, or maybe you don’t since I haven’t been updating here…). But… :X

Anyway, I want to bust out my art supplies a lot more and use them, try new styles, new supplies etc…

So yeah, the Emott comes with this cool plastic stand… And the pens have this little nub on the end that sticks right in there tight, so you can invert the whole thing and it won’t fall off. The bad thing though, is that it’s hard to take the pens out! I often end up ripping just the cap off. Especially if you only want the pen in the middle… Or if you are actively switching between colors… In the end I have to rip out all of them… So it’s good for storage and looks neat for display, but practical usage? Not so much.

The pencils have come with the stand too, the same one in fact. But there’s four pencils in a set and the fifth slot is for the refill. I did buy extra refills from Tokyu Hands – the ones that were in stock anyway… And it isn’t cheap. A pack of 8 leads – that’s two per color – for 3 SGD. That’s like 37.5 cents per lead. Compared to regular graphite leads… That’s extorbidant isn’t it?

Another downside I realised with trying to do entire drawings with these mechanical pencils is that… They are slippery and hard to hold a bunch of them at once… They just slip off… And fall off the table (I have very little desk space available so…). And then after finishing you have to retract the mechanism one by one. And of course, looking at the photo now, the colors aren’t as vibrant as proper color pencils… These look more like something drawn with really cheap color pencils… Or just, not burnished in and all. I did layer it up quite a lot, and in some ares it feels as if the pencil won’t layer anymore. But I guess it’s more meant for like… Sketch lines rather than a whole colored drawing. Oh wells. I had to give it a go though, and it was fun! It also does look better in person.

Finally! The acrylic gouache. I did spend a while trying to find them yesterday afternoon… After my two meetings which I attended online. No surprise I guess, the bag of goodies from overjoyed was buried under stuff….

I was also so sleepy… I decided to bust out my ceremonial matcha and made some matcha latter. I need to learn how to make it properly though… So that I don’t get that crap ton of matcha ‘beads’. I did end up ordering two of the bamboo whisks online lol. Hope they come soon…

So I finally got to try the acrylic gouche. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no additional seal in each tube… Which was good I guess. Because it’s such a chore to have to open every single tube and you end up with paint on the foil that you don’t want to waste etc…

Also busted out this cool ceramic palette. The only problem is that… I don’t have something to cover it and keep the pain moist… I ended up using some cling film so we’ll see how that goes in a bit. I did squeeze out a bit too much brown by accident so as a result I decided to use a very limited color palette – just brown, yellow, white and black, and I was very pleased with how the painting turned out. Also nearly finished all the paint in the process.

I didn’t bother with washi taping up the sides so the frame is all wonky. Yeah being lazy is one thing, but I feel that the wonky background frame adds to the appeal of the piece. It fits the whole folk art vibe IMO.

It was fun to do this painting, and it was really easy to do too. Very simple shapes… Didn’t use a reference even… I did see Mira do something like that in a video, but I can’t remember which video so I just went in without a clear idea in mind. The dots were a bit tedious and I did have some issues with some of my brushes but after I got that sorted and used a different brush, it went a lot more smoothly. It was really fun. Despite how tedious the dots seem… It only took me like an hour and a half to do the piece, and that’s including the time I took to look for brushes, and find cling wrap to wrap up the palette (I was just estimating by the photo time stamps!).

It was kinda crazy though, starting a painting at 11:43pm. Well by the time I found the paints and made the matcha it was past 6pm… Which means dinner time… And then I wanted to go for a walk… Which I did for about 90 mins… (Walked over 6km, yay me, and also went to check out the night bazaar in the market for national day.) And by the time I cooled off, showered… It was really late. So yup, I painted till like 1:30 am, after which I decided to just leave the paint be and if it dries out… Well I get to use a different color palette for the next one.. (And it’s really just thin layers of paint left, not at all that much.)

Last bit, some miscellaneous photos. 1st one is the red and while lighting of the pasar malam (night market) from afar. Very eye catching, and I decided to check it out on the way back then. 2nd photo is from the side of the night market. I haven’t been to a night market in ages… Ok, there’s been food stalls on the empty space in front of West Mall and I’ve walked by those, even bought myself a snack or two. But that’s like… Half a night market? Not a fully formed one? With just two rows of food stalls. Ok this one isn’t that big either, and it was missing some of the more iconic night market food stalls… But it did have stalls selling non-food items, like mobile accessories, clothes… Even a stall selling potted plants! Oh and there’s that row of crane games. Didn’t use to be a thing in night markets of the past, and it all but disappeared from everywhere but the game arcades like say, 10 years ago. But now they are back with a vengeance, and there are even crane game shops in malls.

Finally the last pic there is for an ergonomic pencil grip. I got two sets of these from Artfriend… Because I got those FC black edition color pencils that have a triangular barrel and it made my hand cramp after using them for a bit. Might be better now that my wrists and forearm are more rested and ‘stronger’. But thought I’d give these a try as well… It’ll be troublesome to use though, but… Oh wells.

This post would have ended right here but this literally JUST arrived at my doorstep. Literally just! Pokemon go plus+! Whee. I haven’t been active in pokemon go for maybe like a year now… But I did feel like maybe playing it a bit casually again… And then pokemon sleep came out and when I saw that this guy could double as a sleep tracker, I understood why ppl were buying these in the Changi Jewel pokemon center a while back and yes, I was sold. I just ordered one off the internet though. Didn’t realise it came with a cute pikachu themed strap. The strap ingeniously hooks to the clip via magnets. But alas, the magnet is so weak, it’s not gonna hold the weight of the device I’m sure… So I’m not sure what the clip is for actually? I don’t know. I haven’t even put the strap on, or link it to my games yet. I just decided to pause there and finish up this post before getting back into it.

So there, I’ll end the post there, got a new toy to play with after all!

To buy or not to buy…

The magic keyboard for my iPad Pro that is.

Pros:

  • Good typing experience
  • Has a trackpad
  • I can charge the iPad from the left side as well via the bypass charging port

Cons:

  • Expensive!!!
  • Heavy
  • Currently the keyboard folio has no trackpad, and I’m using it just fine. Might not actually use the trackpad that much/might take a while to get used to the idea of there being a trackpad.
  • Not sure when the new keyboard will be out… But sources seem to indicate it’ll be next year rather than this year

Hmm… Not that many points I can think of really? Hmm… My greatest worry I guess is that if a brand new keyboard comes out in Oct then I’ll be like, well fuck me. Other than that… I’m just so tempted to get one…
