Oh oh oh FINALLY!

Gosh. I’ve been wanting to write blog posts for a while, like at least do an update before flying off. But who knew life threw me a curve ball and here I am, on my hotel room bed in San Diego, typing away on my fancy schmecy, brand new magic keyboard 2 for iPad.

Yeah. I did it. I take it as reward for finishing the first draft of my grant proposal…

What grant proposal you ask? Yeah, a grant call opened up like two weeks before we were due to leave, and it’s probably like the only grant that I’m eligible to apply for? So well. Yup. It wasn’t about the paper this time… But trying to write a grant proposal. And it was hard… Obviously my first time, and I barely had much motivation to write. And of course there was stuff to be packed, last minute things to do – for the trip and for work… Ultimately I just didn’t have the time/capacity to do an update.

Flight was alright, but very, very long. 15.5 hours from SG to SF! And there was quite a bit of turbulence too… Ok not *that* bad, but for the first time ever the whole of yesterday I was still feeling the movement when I was sitting down. Over that now, but boy I was surprised that first time that happened. It happens if I’ve been in the sea or on a boat yes, but plane? That’s a first. Flight was COLD. Didn’t help that I bought a new jacket – new as in never worn before – on the flight, and didn’t realise just how thin that jacket was. Yup. I was freezing. Jacket was bought online like 2 years ago but covid ya know? And with the SG weather I don’t wear jackets in Singapore basically. So.. Yeah. Didn’t do much on the flight… I loaded youtube videos and Amazon prime videos but only watched like 3 of ‘em. With how little space there was in economy, I couldn’t open my ipad and have it docked on the keyboard folio, so that makes typing blog posts out of the question.

The whole flight was pretty much always in ‘night mode’ to help with the jet lag, and I did want to try sleeping so I didn’t cube either. In flight entertainment wasn’t all that to my liking as well unfortunately… I’m not really a movies person, because I hate how I’m just keep thinking about the movie the entire day after watching… But I did end up ‘watching’ Titanic (neighbour was watching that) and the Passenger (someone in front was watching that) through other ppl’s screens for quite a bit. The passenger has quite an interesting plot, I went to read up on imdb… But I don’t want to watch it… It’s like… Part scary and… Idk. I just don’t like movies in general ok? Even dramas are kinda meh. I’m ok with documentary. But give me variety tv.

Oh yes. I searched up IMDB. During the flight. Free wifi by Singapore Airlines, that was really amazing, especially for long haul flights like mine. Yeah it’s not fast, I doubt you can game, and streaming is blocked, and it’s really not fast so websites and images takes a while to load…. And some stretches during the flight there was no connection at all… But I could msg all right (when there was connection that is, and mostly it was alright), and I could send photos even, though that does take a little longer…. Oh yeah, I’m travelling with my colleague. Two girls, we both picked aisle seats and it’s a 3 columns (or rows, depending on how you look at it) of seats, 3 seats per block… We were in the middle block and on different sides, with a guy (a stranger) stuck in the middle. Poor guy lol. But me and my colleague were messaging each other on whatsapp during the flight lol.

A whole bunch of photos coming in, click to see larger photos, and explanations/stories in the caption.

We had about 3+ hours for layover before flying to San Diego where the conference actually is… I thought that would be ample time, but who knew we had to clear customs, collect our baggage, re-check in baggage and go through security again… And grab lunch since the next flight had no meal service. We did have time to eat lunch so it wasn’t that bad, but it was still quite rushed! I was definitely worried that we wouldn’t have enough time.

I didn’t get to sleep much at all on the first flight, like maybe 3 seperate 1 hour naps, and maybe 2 hours before landing? I did have a good sleep for the entire duration of the 1 hour 20ish mins connecting flight though. Just completely knocked out.

Afterwards it’s just Lyft to the hotel… Uber eats for dinner… And then grant writing hell. I slept for like 4 – 5 hours… Woke up around 12:45am, tried to go back to sleep but couldn’t for an hour, and decided to just start grant writing. Definitely way more productive and motivated… Wrote a lot by the time morning rolled around. Write, eat Uber eats left overs (we ordered chipotle), write, rinse and repeat.. All the way till I was mostly done by 1pm (did try to take a nap in between but couldn’t sleep). Then I called it a day and went to have a lovely sleep all the way till 4pm, where upon we decided to go out to the mall to grab some dinner… Before heading back to continue writing. I finished up my first draft earlier… While my poor colleague still writing right now. But hey, she’s already on her second draft, whereas I’m on my first draft and awaiting comments from my boss and colleague… She pretty much had to rewrite everything after the first round of comments… I hope I don’t have to… At least not rewrite *that* much! >< It’s definitely a learning experience, but still, it’s a painful one! In comparison, I can type ‘nonsense’ like a million times faster (this blog).

More photos coming up…

So it’s been solely mexican food since we landed in SD… I’m liking the keyboard so far. Been using the trackpad A LOT, I guess the fact that I’ve been only using the trackpad on my work laptop when I’ve been writing the proposal at home, and now in SD helped. I’m using to using a trackpad again. Still need to get used to some of the stuff, but overall it’s great. The key location and stuff is a bit different from the folio since it has to make space for the trackpad and all, but I’m almost all used to it now. Somehow I get times when I accidentally misclick the trackpad on my laptop and the cursor ends up going elsewhere – happened quite a bit in fact. But none so far with the iPad. Not bad at all. The tiny size of the left and right arrow keys throws me off… But I’m loving how the corners of the keyboard and rounded and smooth and doesn’t bite into my hands/body. The ‘floating’ mount Also means that I won’t trap the iPad too tightly between my fat tummy and knees, causing the entire ipad to come crumbing down from the folio. That and the much more rounded and no longer painful edge alone makes it worth it… I think. And of course having an additional passthrough port on the LEFT is great too, because when I’m on my desk at home, my cable will be coming in from the left, and even with a 3m long cable, the cable would be bent, so having ports on both sides is great. The backlit keys are good too… Like there in the hotel room, it’s kinda dim and I can see the keys. Heck, my bloody stupid work laptop doesn’t even have backlit keys! I had to turn on the lights to type properly at 2am last night… Yeah I’m not that great of a touch typer and it’s just… I just need that visual cue to find where to put my hands and all? Yeah I’m a very visual and spatial person.

Yup… Now I definitely regret not buying the magic keyboard from the start. This is so enjoyable to use… I can’t see myself wanting to go back to using the folio? Yeah this is indeed heavier than the folio but… After carrying both my ipad and my absurdly heavy work laptop, plus charger and mouse around for a while… (over 8 kg)… What’s a few hundred grams more lol! Of course the very nicely padded pacsafe bag makes it so easy to carry as well, though the bag itself is really sturdy and that adds to the weight!

Alright, that’s all for now. Till next time!

Folk art?

What the heck is folk art?

What kind of style is that? I’ve seen stuff by indigenous tribes and all, but depending on which culture… It’s all really different… So I when I saw the folk art that Mira Byler did, it was completely new to me. It’s definitely not usual style… But hey, it looks fun and is easy to do… And I wanted to try out my holbien acrylic gouache so…

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with the oldest stuff I did that’s unposted, and then get to the gouache later.

Remember I said that I got the Uni Emott fineliners? Well, I happened to watch this video by Shibasaki and hence the reason why I doodled a fish. I really like that rough layer style he did… Yes I do now have that coupy-pen ordered… I think I did have some of those as a kid, but it wasn’t a staple for sure. Yeah I could do the same with color pencils and all, and ya all know I already have a ton of colors pencils (ok, or maybe you don’t since I haven’t been updating here…). But… :X

Anyway, I want to bust out my art supplies a lot more and use them, try new styles, new supplies etc…

So yeah, the Emott comes with this cool plastic stand… And the pens have this little nub on the end that sticks right in there tight, so you can invert the whole thing and it won’t fall off. The bad thing though, is that it’s hard to take the pens out! I often end up ripping just the cap off. Especially if you only want the pen in the middle… Or if you are actively switching between colors… In the end I have to rip out all of them… So it’s good for storage and looks neat for display, but practical usage? Not so much.

The pencils have come with the stand too, the same one in fact. But there’s four pencils in a set and the fifth slot is for the refill. I did buy extra refills from Tokyu Hands – the ones that were in stock anyway… And it isn’t cheap. A pack of 8 leads – that’s two per color – for 3 SGD. That’s like 37.5 cents per lead. Compared to regular graphite leads… That’s extorbidant isn’t it?

Another downside I realised with trying to do entire drawings with these mechanical pencils is that… They are slippery and hard to hold a bunch of them at once… They just slip off… And fall off the table (I have very little desk space available so…). And then after finishing you have to retract the mechanism one by one. And of course, looking at the photo now, the colors aren’t as vibrant as proper color pencils… These look more like something drawn with really cheap color pencils… Or just, not burnished in and all. I did layer it up quite a lot, and in some ares it feels as if the pencil won’t layer anymore. But I guess it’s more meant for like… Sketch lines rather than a whole colored drawing. Oh wells. I had to give it a go though, and it was fun! It also does look better in person.

Finally! The acrylic gouache. I did spend a while trying to find them yesterday afternoon… After my two meetings which I attended online. No surprise I guess, the bag of goodies from overjoyed was buried under stuff….

I was also so sleepy… I decided to bust out my ceremonial matcha and made some matcha latter. I need to learn how to make it properly though… So that I don’t get that crap ton of matcha ‘beads’. I did end up ordering two of the bamboo whisks online lol. Hope they come soon…

So I finally got to try the acrylic gouche. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no additional seal in each tube… Which was good I guess. Because it’s such a chore to have to open every single tube and you end up with paint on the foil that you don’t want to waste etc…

Also busted out this cool ceramic palette. The only problem is that… I don’t have something to cover it and keep the pain moist… I ended up using some cling film so we’ll see how that goes in a bit. I did squeeze out a bit too much brown by accident so as a result I decided to use a very limited color palette – just brown, yellow, white and black, and I was very pleased with how the painting turned out. Also nearly finished all the paint in the process.

I didn’t bother with washi taping up the sides so the frame is all wonky. Yeah being lazy is one thing, but I feel that the wonky background frame adds to the appeal of the piece. It fits the whole folk art vibe IMO.

It was fun to do this painting, and it was really easy to do too. Very simple shapes… Didn’t use a reference even… I did see Mira do something like that in a video, but I can’t remember which video so I just went in without a clear idea in mind. The dots were a bit tedious and I did have some issues with some of my brushes but after I got that sorted and used a different brush, it went a lot more smoothly. It was really fun. Despite how tedious the dots seem… It only took me like an hour and a half to do the piece, and that’s including the time I took to look for brushes, and find cling wrap to wrap up the palette (I was just estimating by the photo time stamps!).

It was kinda crazy though, starting a painting at 11:43pm. Well by the time I found the paints and made the matcha it was past 6pm… Which means dinner time… And then I wanted to go for a walk… Which I did for about 90 mins… (Walked over 6km, yay me, and also went to check out the night bazaar in the market for national day.) And by the time I cooled off, showered… It was really late. So yup, I painted till like 1:30 am, after which I decided to just leave the paint be and if it dries out… Well I get to use a different color palette for the next one.. (And it’s really just thin layers of paint left, not at all that much.)

Last bit, some miscellaneous photos. 1st one is the red and while lighting of the pasar malam (night market) from afar. Very eye catching, and I decided to check it out on the way back then. 2nd photo is from the side of the night market. I haven’t been to a night market in ages… Ok, there’s been food stalls on the empty space in front of West Mall and I’ve walked by those, even bought myself a snack or two. But that’s like… Half a night market? Not a fully formed one? With just two rows of food stalls. Ok this one isn’t that big either, and it was missing some of the more iconic night market food stalls… But it did have stalls selling non-food items, like mobile accessories, clothes… Even a stall selling potted plants! Oh and there’s that row of crane games. Didn’t use to be a thing in night markets of the past, and it all but disappeared from everywhere but the game arcades like say, 10 years ago. But now they are back with a vengeance, and there are even crane game shops in malls.

Finally the last pic there is for an ergonomic pencil grip. I got two sets of these from Artfriend… Because I got those FC black edition color pencils that have a triangular barrel and it made my hand cramp after using them for a bit. Might be better now that my wrists and forearm are more rested and ‘stronger’. But thought I’d give these a try as well… It’ll be troublesome to use though, but… Oh wells.

This post would have ended right here but this literally JUST arrived at my doorstep. Literally just! Pokemon go plus+! Whee. I haven’t been active in pokemon go for maybe like a year now… But I did feel like maybe playing it a bit casually again… And then pokemon sleep came out and when I saw that this guy could double as a sleep tracker, I understood why ppl were buying these in the Changi Jewel pokemon center a while back and yes, I was sold. I just ordered one off the internet though. Didn’t realise it came with a cute pikachu themed strap. The strap ingeniously hooks to the clip via magnets. But alas, the magnet is so weak, it’s not gonna hold the weight of the device I’m sure… So I’m not sure what the clip is for actually? I don’t know. I haven’t even put the strap on, or link it to my games yet. I just decided to pause there and finish up this post before getting back into it.

So there, I’ll end the post there, got a new toy to play with after all!

To buy or not to buy…

The magic keyboard for my iPad Pro that is.

Pros:

  • Good typing experience
  • Has a trackpad
  • I can charge the iPad from the left side as well via the bypass charging port

Cons:

  • Expensive!!!
  • Heavy
  • Currently the keyboard folio has no trackpad, and I’m using it just fine. Might not actually use the trackpad that much/might take a while to get used to the idea of there being a trackpad.
  • Not sure when the new keyboard will be out… But sources seem to indicate it’ll be next year rather than this year

Hmm… Not that many points I can think of really? Hmm… My greatest worry I guess is that if a brand new keyboard comes out in Oct then I’ll be like, well fuck me. Other than that… I’m just so tempted to get one…

Emottttt

It came. The last set of Uni Emott pencils that I was missing, as well as the set of Uni Emott pens. 5 pens in a set. Unfortunately I have yet to try those pens…

It arrived last night I was just busy typing up my dream (like literally had a strange dream the night before, and I have a ‘dream blog’ to record my strange dreams)… As well as typing up about the Disney 100 rubik’s cube that arrived a while back.

By the time I was done it was past 1am and I decided that I should not type this up as well because I shouldn’t sleep that late…

But well guess what? I’m still so exhausted now. So much so for thinking that I’d mostly recovered… Not quite… Ok maybe I should try to sleep earlier at night, since regardless I just wake up at 7-ish am anyway… Though that in itself is also an improvement to the 6+am I was waking up at a while back. Gah. I’m just so tired now, I don’t really know what to say.

Got a few stuff for the trip done today… Paid for travel insurance, and signed up for YouTrip and Revolut… So that’s the currency part covered… Well sort of. I think I do need to change some $$$ for the trip. Like a few hundred in USD and Euros combined. Not too much… I’m expecting most places to accept credit card, and I’m wary of pickpockets in Paris… And that would be our first stop in Europe… So I don’t want to bring too much cash around… And gotta keep that wallet and credit card safe! Yeah…

I did talk about my upcoming trip in this blog right? I think so… I can’t remember anymore… My mind is in a mess and right now I’m just sooo tired… I could use some caffeine but I’m also a little wary of that, because my stomach isn’t in the best condition and coffee or tea makes it worse… Ok, made myself some pu’er, it’s a fermented tea with a lot less caffeine and just less ‘cold’ and more stomach friendly… Just gotta wait for it to cool… My tongue can’t take hot stuff well.

Oh what was I talking about again? My upcoming conference trip. Go read my last few blog posts if you don’t know what I’m talking about… And while you are at it, you could check out my other Twisty blog too.

Hmm… Nothing much else I was intending to write about actually… I haven’t even taken those new pencils and pens out of the box yet, so unfortunately I can’t say much else about them… I hope to do more… ‘Free’ sort of drawings, because I find it too time consuming to do nice, detailed drawings where I draft and erase over and over with the pencil… But I guess without adequate drawing skills, you can’t just expect a beautiful drawing to appear freehand and all… Oh wells. Whatever. Either way it’s more practice needed, and I just want to pick up the pencil and sketch something… Or just a random pen and do some sketch…

Speaking of which… I had a really cool metal (I can’t remember aluminium or titanium) marker with like a knock mechanism or something… Like a really thick marker that is great for graphical sketches and stuff… And I have no freaking clue where it is! Been just looking for it for a while now and I just can’t find it. Just. No idea where it went. And being a little… OCD or whatever… It just distresses me so much. Oh same with the tiny cross for the miniature that I’ve been painting. I freaking lost a piece! I have no ida where on my very messy table (or heck, even the floor!) it might have dropped to. Yeah. Of course it’s my fault for not keeping the pieces properly. But damn! It’s almost done too… Damn! Now I can’t finish up the last bit of painting for the environment and I can’t put it all together because I’m missing a piece! Like… arghs. I’ll show photos of the completed project someday… But I did take a photo of part of it…. Nope. I swear I took a photo, but I can’t find it now. Oh wells. I’ll just show you readers another time. Bleargh. So sleepy.

I guess I’ll just call it a day here… Till next time.

Shopping! Art supplies!

I scooted off early from work the other day… Wednesday I think? And went shopping in Orchard road. Mainly for the sake of visiting Overjoyed… And well I also dropped in on Tokyu Hands, Donki, and several places along the way.

Tokyu Hands! Ahhh I do miss that shop. I wish the one at Westgate was still around… We need a new outlet in the west, open one please! I was pleasantly surprised to see them selling both the Sailor and the Pilot dip pens. It’s the first time seeing the Pilot dip pens sold in stores here for me. Not that they weren’t sold here until now, don’t get me wrong, but I just haven’t been shopping in ages. It’s been a long time since I last visited Think or Fook Hing…. Because work has just been quite crazy. The good thing is that I haven’t been that crazy in terms of buying FP stuff, because neither of those two shops sells stuff online. I still did make some online purchases from OVJ and cityluxe though… :X And I did buy A LOT of art supplies… Like all my miniature painting stuff recently. Lots of acrylic paints for miniatures, and lots of teeny tiny brushes. The space constraints are getting ever more severe… Opps.

The ‘I work on computers’ sticker is absolutely adorable. But alas, the quality didn’t feel that good, like I wasn’t sure if it could take a beating… So I ended up not getting it. I was looking around to see if there were any nice B-side label stickers but the ones they had in stock were pretty generic. I did buy a colorful merlion one though. Might stick it on my luggage bag for the trip…?

Also got taken in by the Uni Emott pencils and bought two sets. Ended up ordering the last set on Amazon (free shipping whee) to complete the collection. I’ve given them a whirl… They are ok. Nice, smooth barrel, very light… But might be a bit slippery. Not like the most ‘high class’ of mechanical pencils, but they function alright. It comes with a stand too so that’s pretty neat, if you want to display it on your desk and all. The lead itself is on the harder side, and the colors seems to be a little light. Still, I thought it might be fun to sketch and doodle with those… I’m treating it more like erasable color pencils maybe? I don’t know. But overall they are very pretty. Not the cheapest, but very pretty stuff.

Overjoyed! What can I say? I’m finally here. And seeing all the products in person rather than online. The last time I went there has to be in Nov last year, when twoset did their 4mil subscriber concert. I got tickets for the rehearsal and went shopping in Orchard road afterwards, before ending up at Cathay to do a quick shop at Ovj… As well as switching out the ‘liquid pencil’ supply on a drawing box I got online, only to find out that it’s really more like a paste than ‘liquid’. Yeah. They have since moved to Cineleisure and I finally visited their new shopping last week. It’s nice to see Mathu there, but she was so busy she only got LUNCH at like… 7pm. Didn’t realise/remember it till much later, but the Taiwan night market food street thing just had their soft launch, so I guess that brought a ton of ppl to their shop too. She asked if I was there for that – nope, I was there solely for Ovj. The entire shop was pretty big, but still I think it’s smaller than the Cathay outlet. It had more of an industrial and less polished feel, more reminiscent of their Rocher outlet. I was delighted to see all the Holbien paints and just couldn’t resist picking up a bunch of Holbien watercolor tubes. I ordered a bunch of their arcyla gouache previously, but have not tried them yet! Mira Byler likes them a lot and I was tempted by her! Also delightful to me was to see all the open stock color pencils. Well previously I already saw they had Holbien open stock… And I did buy myself a set, plus some open stock in my latest online buying spree… But I have yet to test those lol. And ahhh the irojiten color pencils! I saw someone posting about those sets on the Sarah Renae Clark’s facebook group, and my interest was pipped. There are sets available on the Ovj website, but I didn’t see them in person in the shop… So I picked out some pretty pastel colors as open stock instead… I did spend less money then I would have if I’d gotten a set, so I felt that I made the right choice. They have other colors that are more vibrant, but they seem to do a lot more pastel colors so… I thought I’d go with it, and can use them for more cute doodles with no shading.

I did like that the barcode stickers on the irojiten were the high quality, metallic foil stickers, so I had no trouble peeling them off, unlike cheap and aged paper stickers. I still had a few pencils that had sticky residue that needed cleaning off though. But at least I didn’t have to dig my fingernails into sticky paper stickers, trying to get every last bit of paper off. And it’s not because I’m that OCD about this… But rather, the additional thickness of the sticker makes it too thick to fit into my automated pencil sharpener. And in the case of these metal foil stickers… I’m not sure if the sharpener will handle it well at all.

Took a photo of the back of the Emott pencils, where the numbers and colors are listed… I bought refills as well and that’s for the purpose of identifying the refill lead. It just comes in a box of 8 leads, all mixed in a tube… And it’s kinda hard to identify which pencil is for which lead box… Especially since some of the colors (like the two reds) are rather similar. I’m debating whether to just load up the leads into the pencil… But it will jiggle and be noisy in the pencil so… Maybe not.

Also got the Koh-i-noor calligraphy pens. They are cheap, something like just $4.50, and there’s 4 sizes. The lines are nice a crisps, and makes me want to pick up black lettering again.

Ahh the pencils and color pencils. The Emott is less soft than I’d expected… So the leads won’t run out too fast. It’s also a thicker 0.9 width size, so the run out of the mill 0.5 and 0.7 mechanical pencils won’t work with this lead – if you’re thinking of just getting the lead refills. This makes me want to try out othered pencil leads though, and I swear I have some hidden somewhere in my stash. Cheap ones from Aliexpress. I think pilot also has made some colored leads? I do like having the whole range of colors all ‘inked up’ (borrowing some fountain pen terminology!) though, and the design of the Emott pencils are nice and clean. I did also grab a set of 4 (? The small set) Emott fine liners. They have huge sets, like 50 fine liners and stuff. I was tempted, but I really don’t use fine liners *that* often so. I held myself back successfully. Phew.

As for the irojiten pencils. I don’t know what type they are – wax or oil based. Didn’t read up about them. But they aren’t as soft as prismacolors, and don’t seem to blend as well. Not as hard as the polychromos though… Like an in between. Haven’t actually properly done anything with them though, so I won’t venture to say more. The core is definitely way stronger than the prismacolors, or even the faber castell black editions. I can sharpen them to a much longer point and use them without the point breaking. They are nice and smooth too.

Finally… Did another little drawing with my pentel arts fluorescent oil pastels. My comfort go to drawing of a scientist in a lab coat… Only that it’s a lot less detailed than my usual drawings. This would be the first time I’m drawing that colored in actually. I think? Usually I just do it as an outline/sketch. I actually draw it in the farewell gift book that we will be giving to the PhD student in our lab… It’s a useful thing to know how to draw lol!

Alright. That’s all for now… Till the next one I guess?

Burning my life…

In exchange for publishing a journal paper. That’s what my life has been pretty much the last half a year. As well as through Aug – say Nov last year. So really… Not much of a break at all…

And honestly, I don’t know if it’s really worth it. It’s been going on for way too long, and it’s been wayyy too much work. I swear, working 80 hour (or more) weeks is NOT normal for a research officer. You pretty much only hear that sort of numbers for doctors…? Not that it’s right for anyone to have to put in that sort of hours, regardless of pay… But I’m only making a tiny fraction of what those folks are earning. Maybe something in the realm of a quarter or a 1/5? It’s rapidly becoming a life exchange. Exchanging my physical and mental health for… Nothing. No freaking clue if it’s even worth anything at all.

Yeah.

Only in the past few weeks, after a lot of shit and health scares in the family… That I forced myself to slow down… On the weekends that is. Tried to do a bit of art besides catching up on my sleep. Yeah, there’s just too much shit to be done. I just could not avoid working till like 11 pm or 12 am on weekdays… The last two weeks were exceptionally bad, Like I’d be jumping into the lab at 11 pm to start imaging a sample… I’m exhausted. Physically and mentally.

Finally have a bit of a breather now as we wait for the editor to respond…

I haven’t been writing letters to pen pals in almost a year… But I did get back to journaling recently… Or what I call ‘scrapbooking’. Basically, printing photos on my Canon selphy photo printer and then sticking it on a notebook and writing some text to go with it.

Speaking of the photo printer… Geez… It gave me quite a scare as it just refused to recognise the ink cartridge and photo paper. Dug around the web for a bit, tried cleaning it out to no avail… In the end I almost dissembled the whole thing, till I could dissemble it no more, then put it back, and it miraculously works again. Has been working for a few weeks now (well I printed two other times besides the first) and so I take it as it being fixed now.

So what artsy stuff have I been up to? I did a few drawings… I didn’t take photos of everything I did… But some drawings, and also painted some miniatures… That was pretty fun.

Yeah that’s some of the stuff I’ve been up to… Got two of the miniverse make it mini food and guess what? They were IDENTICAL. Color and all. Geez. Talk about luck/dupes. It was also way less exciting than I thought it might be to put it togethers… Maybe if I’d gotten something else it would be more fun… But yeah… I gave the dupe to my sis and whenever I feel tempted to buy another, I think of how I’d gotten doubles and didn’t quite have much fun with it, and all that temptation would be gone. Yeah partly because I wasn’t quite in the mood for it maybe. And partly because I’d already known what to expect because I watched Nerdecrafter doing it… so the element of surprise wasn’t there… I think I’d have way more fun doing ‘freestyle’ resin crafts… I did make my first item with the sophie and toffee kits and that was pretty fun. Deciding on what color to put in and all, making a mess etc… Way messier but wat more fun than the make it miniverse kit so yup. Have yet to make another resin craft, sure would like to though!

Well that’s it for now I guess. It’s dinner time so see ya later!

In the blink of an eye…

Gosh. So much time has passed huh?

I really have not done much ‘blog worthy’ things to post. Heck, if anything my desk is covered by a thick layer of stuff. Unopened penpal letters. New purchases, stationery…. I have new pens and they are all unopened, uninked, untested…

Instead, work has been crazy, and never ending… And to add to that I’m cramming for GRE… So no, the situation is not going to improve anytime soon. Not in the slightest bit…

Just here to take a bit of a breather. I did manage to cram all of the GRE math syllabus yesterday and today. That’s a real achievement I tell ya, considering how much I hate and suck at math. Tried a few test sections and been getting 3-5 questions wrong each time… So it seems that I can expect 160 ish score for that. Not great, considering that pretty much all the wrong questions were either because I misunderstood the question, didn’t read the question carefully enough, or was simply careless. I was also quite exhausted doing the paper, but with the amount of work that I would most likely have over the next few months, I would be even worse for wear by the time I take the test so… It’s not going to get any better.

The vocabs though are the real killer. Tried a bit of practice test and I score 11/20 in one, 15/20 in another, and a pathetic 10/20 in a 3rd. Basically, I’m NOT going to hit my bare minimum 320 target required at the moment. That leaves me with about 3 weeks to go to remember all those vocabs and practice essay writing… And I guess doing some more math practice tests because I can’t afford to get rusty before test day eh?

The timing is just… Not great…. Too much shit going on right now.

Alright. Just a short entry. Till next time… When this madness is over, hopefully.

It’s been a while… And…

And now I’m here, writing this post on a spanking brand new iPad pro. And honestly… I don’t even know what the new features are and what not. The only thing that looks different right now is that… It’s a brand new keyboard. Yes, even though my previous one was fairly new, it still got dirty rather fast. And secondly, there is no screen protector on this iPad. And I don’t think I will put a screen protector on either…. Previously I used the nanodots screen protector. Great for using the Apple pencil on, but alas, those dots fall off from the impact of the keyboard on the screen pretty quickly… And left ugly marks on the screen protector. And truth to be told, I very rarely use my Apple Pencil… So yes, shiny and sleek screen, no more screen protector, no more matte surface and bald marks from the keyboard. Had been debating taking off the screen protector for quite a while already…. But well. Now that I have a new iPad, I’ll just not use any screen protector anymore. It just dawned on me that it’s a new model and… Would the spare nanodots screen protectors still fit? It should? Still the same 12.9 inch iPad… Only that it’s the latest model, and with more storage space… And the four cameras at the back therefore I had to buy a new keyboard. Damn. Thankfully the Apple Pencil is still usable…? Still spent a huge fortune though.

No. This was a completely unplanned expenditure. Which is the whole reason why I’m so salty about it, and quite frankly is the least excited about a new electronic toy ever. Last Sunday my old iPad pro just died a really sudden death. That iPad thus far has been serving me well, no signs of slowing down whatsoever. The only thing I noticed after about 4.5 years or usage was that the battery life is somewhat poorer, like I would not be able to go an entire day on a single charge if I’m using it heavily like for doing video editing, or more commonly well, youtube marathon watching. But that is to be expected of a 4.5 year old gadget… And in all honestly, the battery is still very respectable. One night of watching youtube might get the battery life down to 60 or 40%. But alas, last Sunday. I was still using the iPad in the morning, starting off my day watching a few youtube videos. Then dad started packing stuff in the living room and naturally I had to help. Fast forward a few hours later, midway through the packing… And I finally had the chance to take a bit of a breather. Went into my room and as per my habit, hit on the iPad spacebar (I always use it with the keyboard folio) to see if there were any new notifications and… Nothing. Black screen. Just. Nothing. I tried turning it on, nope. Force restart with that volume button up and down thing. Nope. Nothing. No response at all. And bear in mind that I didn’t charge the iPad overnight from Saturday so it was at around 40%, so I’d left it charging as I watched the youtube videos and afterwards when I went off to do the clean up. It was plugged in the whole time, so it’s definitely not a case of having insufficient power. I’m not even getting that insufficient power and to plug in sign, or the sign asking you to plug into the computer – which I did do anyway, but to no avail. I unplugged it from the charger for a few hours (and well days now). Charged it more… It just no longer responded.

I was suspecting motherboard failure at this point (but why and how???) and since the iPad is obviously out of warranty, the options would be to take it to the Apple store, and pay like 800-900 bucks for a repair, find a 3rd party shop that could repair it for cheaper… Or well. Buy a new iPad.

I was still planning to bring it down to a 3rd party repair center when 12 midnight rolled around and the 12/12 sales began. By then I had more or less accepted the fate that I would have to spend a ton of money yet again for a new electronic gadget… And well… I guess in a way it was better that the iPad died before the 12/12 sales rather than right afterwards… At least I saved myself 160 bucks. All that stress about the iPad dying went away a little… But I knew it wouldn’t really go away until my work stuff was settled – kind of is now, finally, a week on. And when the iPad finally arrives. And boy did that give me a headache. It took forever to come! It was out for delivery twice, ended the day with a delivery failure due to mis-route twice! Then on the 3rd day there was no movement whatsoever. Contacted shopee customer service twice… Finally, on Friday, I suddenly got a whatsapp from shopee xpress asking if I got the item. Like no? And then no more word from them thereafter. But thankfully the delivery status changed to say out for delivery a while later, and it FINALLY came that evening. And you had to know that in the meantime two of my sis’s packages were delivered by shopee xpress. And it’s not the first time I bought from them and got my packages delivered by shopee xpress. But so many failed deliveries on their part? Now that was an absolute first. Plus they do contactless delivery these days and would just leave the package outside the door, so there is no delivery failure that would result from my own doing. But something just went terribly wrong with the iPad delivery somehow. A $2000 package at that. Yeah I was definitely anxious and worried that stuff would go wrong. What if the delivery person stole the package? Unlikely but damn. More importantly, there were papers to read, emails to respond to… Youtube to watch, and I really wanted to write some blog posts… All of which I would really, really prefer to do on the iPad. Watching youtube especially. The Dell laptop gets so hot and the sound quality is really subpar. I felt the loss greatly and as expensive as it was, I definitely did not regret buying the iPad after those few days without it. It’s just so much more convenient to have something around that is always on, ready to go. I can’t even keep my Dell computer on sleep mode because somehow it doesn’t even know how to sleep properly. The laptop would not sleep properly, CPU would still be running and laptop would be overheating, and battery would be drained and dead in a few more hours. So now I have to shut it down fully each time. As for my work laptop which I have reluctantly lugged home? It was in an even worse state. The laptop refuses to turn on without being plugged in. Even though it seems to be fine without the power plugged in after wards. And it would be showing a full battery charge right after turning on. Yeah they are both Dell and both sucks. My work laptop especially, the screen viewing angle is so pathetic and basically it just constantly looks very washed out. I can’t even stand looking at the screen. It’s that bad. Not a HD screen? No matter. But a terrible washed out screen that’s so hard to read? Nope, I can’t stand it, really.

So here I am. New iPad. Got it restored to whatever last backup was down on my old iPad before the sudden death. Hurrah for auto iCloud backups. All my songs are not in here though, besides those I bought on Apple Music. Still gotta turn on that Dell lappy to sync them in… Yeah I should get that done… Just in case. I typically only play music from my phone but on rare occasions I would play it from my iPad. In either case I have more than enough space now for my music so I might as well put them in.

Yes, sadly I had to get a new keyboard folio. I thought the previous one I bought was the newer version that would compatible with the newer iPads… But nope. When it came I was very puzzled because it still had that oval camera hole. Now I know for sure that it wasn’t actually the new keyboard folio. Sigh. What a waste of money… Sadly. Really nothing much I can do about it now huh. I certainly debated about getting the magic floating keyboard. It was on sale too, like $100 off that? But it was still like a hundred bucks plus more than the keyboard folio, and more importantly it was so heavy, over double the weight of the iPad. And even though it’s just like 300 grams heavily than the keyboard folio… It still adds up to a lot… As if the iPad plus keyboard isn’t heavy enough already… I would feel the weight of it when balancing the iPad on my lap to watch Youtube for sure, at the very least, even if I get used to carrying that weight on my back. What if I bought BOTH keyboards? Crazy expenditure aside, I bought so many cases for my old iPad and…. Pretty much never ever used them. Too troublesome. And I was typing stuff fairly frequently so I just stuck to the smart folio. If I had both… I might well not use the magic keyboard hardly ever. Added to the fact that I did try using the Apple magic trackpad – that still magically works even after all those years, long after the keyboard died (both came with my iMac)… (Wonder if it is still working now…! Haven’t touched it in at least the past year.) And also tried using my bluetooth mouse with the iPad… And the conclusion was that I didn’t like it. If they changed that cursor to an arrow instead of a round dot that would help. But that round dot was so imprecise and difficult to use… I remember video editing with the mouse and… In the end decided it was way more convenient to use just my finger on the screen. Most of the time my fingers would be touching the bottom of the screen so it’s not like I had to stretch my hands out to the top of the screen and have it get tired… Heck even then my arm can still be resting on my lap or somewhere while reaching the top of the screen. Even though it’s the 12.9 inch iPad, it’s not that big VS a desktop screen monitor, and I have it was closer to me. So yeah. Conclusion was just to get the keyboard folio again. It’s a set up that has worked well for me and I believe will continue to do so.

So there it is. Not your typical messydesk post perhaps… But something that I absolutely had to get off my chest. I’d wanted to edit some videos this Dec but in the end there was a lot more work stuff to do, I spent a lot of time packing my room – and it’s still messy, and I intend to continue packing it somemore after posting this… And then the iPad breakdown which took the whole week out basically… So much anxiety with the work stuff etc…. And next week we will spend like 5 days in Malaysia on holiday. Initially the plan was to go enjoy the cool weather in Genting but with the landslide that happened…? Nah we decided to waste that $550 hotel booking and book an airbnb in Malacca instead. More expenditure. Not out of my own pocket this time but still… Can’t be helped though. What’s a messily 500 bucks if that trip ends up killing us all in another freak accident of nature? I kinda… Don’t want to die yet. I do still would love to enjoy that nice cool weather though… But I guess not this year, and perhaps not in Genting highlands.

Alright. That’s all for this post. I’m happy to report that I’ve been writing a lot more recently. Got a few nice and long penpals letters out… And I finally also wrote a long journal entry. Perhaps I will be able to write a little more next year…

Till next time! (Possibly pretty soon? I do have quite a few posts that I want to write, and I’m also really happy that I have a working iPad again. Still have no idea what new features this iPad has that would benefit me though… The lidar thing is cool and all but I don’t actually really have a use for it…)

Stuff is coming!

And by that, I mean I have new items on the way! I ordered a zoom and a music sailor profit off Amazon Japan just because it was so cheap. Well and because I got poisoned by the grinds… Oh gosh. What was it again? It was some calligraphy grind – Chinese calligraphy that is – but it works for writing English too and it gives a nice amount of feedback, which I really love. It’s so awesome and I really like that grind.

That’s at least two more grinds that I want to get the next time we do a consolidated order!

I also caved in and bought a bunch of art supplies off Overjoyed. As well as this year’s inkvent calendar. I haven’t been buying as much fountain pen stuff because I’ve been good and restraining myself. Kinda. I still made a few big value purchases so… It’s not like I’ve been *that* good. But overall I haven’t used my pens much this year at all… And I still bought stuff from hobonichi even though this year’s stuff was pretty much untouched. It’s here already and I haven’t unboxed it.

Ahhh so much stuff that I want to play with… I guess I’d better start with, once again, packing my desk…

Cartridge Pilot V5s!

It’s been a while since I’ve had anything relevant to post here… Because it’s really been that long since I’ve done anything fountain pen or art related. I did buy a bunch of stuff yes, but I’ve not unboxed most of it yet… So maybe next time…

I did however, finally found Pilot V5s being sold in Singapore. I mean, the cartridge ones.

Maybe I just don’t go out and shop around enough… But these cartridge Pilot V5s are just RARE here!

And I’ve been searching for them ever since I’ve heard of their existence. The V5 is a very unique looking pen, and very easy to spot on the shelf. So every time I see a V5 being sold, I’d check if it’s the converter V5 but no luck… That was until last week at The Green Party at Jem!

I’ve seen V5s sold at The Green Party in various different outlets but it has always ONLY been the regular, non-refillable (at least not without forcefully taking the pen apart) ones.

Finally found the converter ones that takes what looks like a regular pilot converter! Awesome stuff. Needless to say I bought a few for myself. One for each color and two blues just because. I’m sure the ink cartridges in there is different from the FP ones they sell? But no matter. More hardworking folks have use pillars to refill with regular V5s with FP inks and had no issues. I’m personally just too lazy to do that. But I honestly also don’t use pens – FP or otherwise – much in the first place so… Why did I buy more pens again? ><

Still. Very excited to finally see the around. I’m told they are much more common in China or even in Malaysia. Definitely makes sense in China because using FPs is much more common there, might even be mandatory in schools? Whereas in Singapore… Apparently Pilot did bring it in before but it just didn’t sell well. No surprise I guess, while pen refills are really popular here, people just aren’t used to buying cartridges to refill a pen. And honestly in the first place the V5 probably isn’t that popular a pen? Students would more likely prefer gel pens. The G2 was the king in my day. Right now just from my casual observation… The pental energel pens are really popular, and so is the pilot friction. Ink pens just… Don’t tend to do so well because of the feathering that happens on cheap paper. And most school students would be using cheap paper – myself of the past included.

Adding to that fact that the cartridge version costs a dollar more… and you have no idea where to get refills… It’s just not worth it. For the common folk, getting ink and syringes to refill a pen is just not worth the hassle. Might as well just get the disposable version that’s cheaper and looks like it holds more ink. Or… Get a gel pen! Despite what it says on the price tag, I assure you that the v5 is an ink pen and not a gel pen. They just don’t have price tags that says otherwise I guess…

Other differences… The disposable v5 is slimmer than the cartridge version. The entire pen – body and cap – is slimmer. It the grip section doesn’t look that different, but I tried to put the cap on wrong and it doesn’t fit. It’s just ever so slightly too tight to put the disposable cap onto the cartridge pen. The clip of the cartridge pen is completely plastic, just with a silver paint in front make it sort of resemble the metal clip of it’s disposable counterpart. There’s a V indent on the top of the cap as well, making it actually very easy to differentiate the two if you’re looking down from the top. I only saw the cartridge versions in blue, black and red, I’m not sure if there are other colors produced… But the disposable V5 comes in a lot more colors, like pink, and this pretty green that I couldn’t resist getting for myself. Of course color options ink wise doesn’t matter for us FP fanatics because we have enough inks to use for many generations to come… As long as you finish the ink in the pen that is. OR you throw that ink out… But I really can’t bear to waste ink like that so… Still. More colors to differentiate between your flock of V5s would be nice – assuming that’s your thing.

Or you could go the hardworking route and use pillars to pull… Like… The front ‘nib’ section out? It’s either that or the plastic stopper at the back. I think I’ve seen someone done it by taking the back piece out. I have no idea which is a better method since I’ve not done it myself before.

So once again, I found these in The Green Party at Jem. No idea if the other The Green Party outlets have them in stock, and also no idea how long the stocks will be around for. TGP tends to buy a batch of goods and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

The cartridge V5s are SGD $2.90 each, and non-disposable ones are $1.90 each (might be cheaper at Popular esp if you’re a member?).

That’s all for today. Till the next time!
