Books…?

Ok, so I wasn’t able to sleep last night, and ended up finishing off two short books. One that I’d read half off during the day + the previous day, and one that I started late last night.

That book reading prompted me to check them off a read in GoodReads, which prompted me to check my reading challenge for last year. For quite a few years now, I’d made it my goal to read a book per month…. But in reality that rarely happens, since I’m mostly just reading webnovels instead of ‘proper’ books.

Well, guess how many books I finished reading last year. None. ZERO. Kosong. Part of me was feeling a bit wtf for sure. Like what do you mean? I look at my kindle on mobile and on Apple Books and I see a few books that I’d ‘recently’ finished reading. Yup. They were marked as read in my 2023 reading challenge. Wtf. Where did all the time go?

It felt like the year just slipped by in the blink of an eye. I accomplished nothing at work. I ate and got fatter. I read zero books.

Ok, I did have a crapton of interns. And I did read a crapton of webnovels, which I didn’t count in my reading challenge. Mostly I just assumed they aren’t on GoodReads. I don’t know, I don’t bother checking. Art was my only saving grace I guess. I did a lot of art. Tons and tons of quick sketches… And my skills and confidence has definitely improved.

But back to the books. I am really quick picky about what I read… And I tend to read more non-fiction or (auto)biography. Romance is a big no, whether webnovel or not. I love fantasy (of the high/low variety typically). But absolutely not if it moves at the pace of a snail… I end up reading lots of books marked as for kids or young adults… Who cares? I like a fast paced, action packed story.

The non-fiction books are enjoyable too, but I just can’t chow through them like I do fiction books. They tend to be longer for one, and I also take more time to think about the facts etc. And just read through it slower. And of course, I only pick topics that I’m interested in. I started a few of such books last year but have yet to finish it… Opps. It’s a tad more of a technical read sometimes… Or rather, it just uses more brain cells, which I clearly had few of last year. I’ve also abandoned a few books in said category because the authors seems to be either, droning on and on about stuff forever, just hopping around historical timelines too much, or just wrote in a very uninteresting and uninspiring manner….

So that’s me on about books… I hope to spend a little more time reading actual books and not just webnovels (and translated webnovels at that…) this year. At least I’m already 2 up from last year lol. Of course, since they were really short autobiographies, it feels like I’m cheating a little. But hey, a book is a book, and they were entertaining books at that. I’m by no means a fast reader. Average at best, and definitely as slow as a snail if you were to compare to folks in say a book club. On one hand, it would be nice if I could read faster. That would mean more efficiency right? But I’m not exactly willing to put in the effort for it. I read my books at night, before bed. Or in the office when I’m slacking…. Or on the commute. I read for leisure… So enjoyment comes first. (Of course I have to read different materials for work too, but that’s a completely different matter.)

Alright. I will end this here. It’s been a long time since I typed so much. Or well, since my previous blog posts. And gosh. My right forearm hurts like shit. The RSI is real. T.T

Gosh, the heat!

It’s so hot right now! By that I mean the weather!

I am so glad I got the new mic… Even though I don’t have the proper set up for it. I tested it quite a bit the other day and found out that 1) I can’t be touching/holding the mic/moving it around otherwise there will be a lot of noise. 2) I had to change the cable to a rode cable, which I obviously had to buy since I ain’t got no mic. Because the free one that came with the Seiran mic gave a lot of background static kind of noise. 3) It’s still noisier than if I off the fan and film with airpods or even this new mic… But this time it’s not the wind noise as in wind blowing at the mic noise, but the fan noise. Will have to do an additional noise processing step I guess. But at least there’s an app in the app store for that.

I wonder how the pros do it… And if the process is any easier on a laptop than the iPad. I mean, the macbook pro is a beast for video editing with final cut pro. But will it make *my* life easier? For one I think the learning curve will be steep… And right now I won’t be able to fully leverage on all it’s features. But I keep having a nagging feeling that in my young and ambitious days, I *might* have paid for final cut or something of that sort… But I never did use it. Maybe it wasn’t the ‘pro’ version or something? I don’t remember in detail anymore, but I did remember looking at final cut pro and being very tempted to buy it…. But the price, obviously, put me off. As much as I knew what a great software it was, it’s just the fact that I was a poor kid back then. Still is but ya know…

And the thing is that, I don’t have an Apple laptop now to even check… I do have an iMac sitting in front of me but, it’s so slow, so much so that I’ve not used it in years. The power cable is unplugged, and that’s a huge mountain of mess to get through to if I were to try and turn it on… Plus the mouse and keyboard have been put away because I needed the space for filming…

So yeah…

I guess if my sis gets a macbook then I’ll borrow it for a bit to log in and check. I can’t seem to be able to check it with a windows laptop or on a website… Or even with my iPad or iPhone. What a bummer.

Oh wait. Ok I found it in settings… But there doesn’t seem to be a search button… I’d have to scroll through it one by one, year by year, this is crazy. Sigh. I’ll try and see if there’s an easier way to do this… I can see it on the iTunes but I still have to scroll through things one by one…

But for now, the iPad Pro is all I have anyway. This will affect my purchase of the next device but… I don’t have the money (after buying a new phone earlier this year!!! Expensive!!!) and the iPad is also serving me well for now, and after getting a new keyboard it’s working great… I don’t see any signs of it aging at all. It’s not getting slower or anything of that sort. Battery life may not be the best anymore but I edit at home 99.99% of the time anyway so that’s not an issue. And it still lasts pretty long, I can bring it out to work and take a few meetings on it and still have more than 70% left. Only if I’m doing more extensive stuff like erm… Watching YouTube videos lol. That seems to suck battery life out of the iPad real quick.

Finally, back to the topic of the weather… So yes. Really glad that I can now have the fan blowing at me while filming. The weather is too hot to not have that, really. It’s 33°C right now. Indoors, out of the sun. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 35°C today… I am not looking forward to the hotter days that are still to come >< Ok. Shall end this here. Seeya on YouTube! Update: I give up on scrolling through all those years of purchases. My wrist is hurting from scrolling on the trackpad... I'll just wait till I have access to a mac and then borrow it to login and check... Like I'd just be able to go to the app page and if I've bought it before it'll be free to download, if not it'll cost $$$. Wonder if I could do it at the Apple store lol.
