Reading…

Hasn’t been going that great. Started reading a few books then defaulted back to reading web novels again.

But I *Have* been reading my art books… Well that one line and wash in the urban landscape book by Neil Whitehead. Just like reading a few pages each day ya know? And looking at his art.

I’ve been trying more loose line and wash style of drawings as well… Did a few yesterday, to varying degrees of success (as defined by yours truly). Did some bird paintings in a more detailed, realistic (but still quick, say 30mins or so, with much of the time being waiting for it to dry) birds…. And I took out my cellulose pad to use again… The Clairfontaine watercolor 100% cellulose pads… I wonder if I can finish them before the eventual house moving about half a year later? That’s the aim now I guess. I’ve got 2 A6 pads and a A5 pad to finish… We’ll see.

Off to a reading start

So I mentioned that one of my goals for this year is to read more. And by reading, I mean things other than web novels. Work related reading doesn’t count either, of course.

It’s only been less than 3 weeks into the year but I’ve definitely been reading books. Not too much, just a few pages here and there everyday… But hey, that’ll add up.

I’ve also bought a bunch of new art books. And there’s all the art books that I got last year as well. Which are pretty much mostly untouched… Well… Also hoping to change that. At least, I’m reading the line and wash art book that I got this year… So there’s that at least. I hope to at least use read and use the art reference books this year.

Let’s see how well I can keep it up.

On the art front, I’ve been doing a lot of simple but quick pen sketches lately. And it’s been quite fun. Mostly quick human sketches that I do on the train…

I also want to try doing more loose sketches. Like the line and wash style but really loose… We’ll see how that goes, and how my style develops over time.

Ok, that’s all for today! Till next time!

Books…?

Ok, so I wasn’t able to sleep last night, and ended up finishing off two short books. One that I’d read half off during the day + the previous day, and one that I started late last night.

That book reading prompted me to check them off a read in GoodReads, which prompted me to check my reading challenge for last year. For quite a few years now, I’d made it my goal to read a book per month…. But in reality that rarely happens, since I’m mostly just reading webnovels instead of ‘proper’ books.

Well, guess how many books I finished reading last year. None. ZERO. Kosong. Part of me was feeling a bit wtf for sure. Like what do you mean? I look at my kindle on mobile and on Apple Books and I see a few books that I’d ‘recently’ finished reading. Yup. They were marked as read in my 2023 reading challenge. Wtf. Where did all the time go?

It felt like the year just slipped by in the blink of an eye. I accomplished nothing at work. I ate and got fatter. I read zero books.

Ok, I did have a crapton of interns. And I did read a crapton of webnovels, which I didn’t count in my reading challenge. Mostly I just assumed they aren’t on GoodReads. I don’t know, I don’t bother checking. Art was my only saving grace I guess. I did a lot of art. Tons and tons of quick sketches… And my skills and confidence has definitely improved.

But back to the books. I am really quick picky about what I read… And I tend to read more non-fiction or (auto)biography. Romance is a big no, whether webnovel or not. I love fantasy (of the high/low variety typically). But absolutely not if it moves at the pace of a snail… I end up reading lots of books marked as for kids or young adults… Who cares? I like a fast paced, action packed story.

The non-fiction books are enjoyable too, but I just can’t chow through them like I do fiction books. They tend to be longer for one, and I also take more time to think about the facts etc. And just read through it slower. And of course, I only pick topics that I’m interested in. I started a few of such books last year but have yet to finish it… Opps. It’s a tad more of a technical read sometimes… Or rather, it just uses more brain cells, which I clearly had few of last year. I’ve also abandoned a few books in said category because the authors seems to be either, droning on and on about stuff forever, just hopping around historical timelines too much, or just wrote in a very uninteresting and uninspiring manner….

So that’s me on about books… I hope to spend a little more time reading actual books and not just webnovels (and translated webnovels at that…) this year. At least I’m already 2 up from last year lol. Of course, since they were really short autobiographies, it feels like I’m cheating a little. But hey, a book is a book, and they were entertaining books at that. I’m by no means a fast reader. Average at best, and definitely as slow as a snail if you were to compare to folks in say a book club. On one hand, it would be nice if I could read faster. That would mean more efficiency right? But I’m not exactly willing to put in the effort for it. I read my books at night, before bed. Or in the office when I’m slacking…. Or on the commute. I read for leisure… So enjoyment comes first. (Of course I have to read different materials for work too, but that’s a completely different matter.)

Alright. I will end this here. It’s been a long time since I typed so much. Or well, since my previous blog posts. And gosh. My right forearm hurts like shit. The RSI is real. T.T

Art goals 2025

I guess much of my goals remains the same as last year.

  1. Continue to make lots of art
  2. Use more of my supplies.

On top of that, I hope to be more mindful about the art supplies I’m buying… And basically spend less money, and make more art. After all I still have so many unused supplies, and already have enough watercolors to last me for a really, really long time…

Drawing/skills wise, there’s a lot that I would like to continue learning and exploring. I started doing urban sketching this year, especially doing lots of quick human sketches. And I’d like to continue that next year. Probably throw in more watercolor urban sketches as well… But I’d also like to explore more, different styles of watercolor urban sketches. Without outlining. Monochrome. Being more loose. Etc.

I dipped my toes into sketching humans this year. And I’d like to continue doing that next year. Maybe doing more targeted practice on sketching hands, limbs, shoes etc. And then I want to learn to sketch other things like trees, birds, other animals etc. I want to be able to draw more things, basically. Maybe do a few realistic color pencil/pencil sketches as well…

I think that’s about all I have on the art front for next year. Loads of changes will be upcoming in the year to come for sure. Worrying stuff. And for some periods I am not sure how much free time I will have for art… But at least I should, I will, still be able to put in a few quick human sketches on the train.

Alright. That’s it for today. A reminder that I post all my art to Cara these days and you can find them here. Till next time!

Japan trip – lessons learnt from my first major trip abroad with my art supplies

So I just came home from a 9 day trip with my family, to Osaka and Kyoto in Japan… And it’s the first major overseas trip we had in a while, as well as the first trip that I took my art supplies on a plane with me.

Did I use my art supplies? Yes. But did I bring too much? Absolutely yes.

Let’s see what I brought. I brought my etchr everyday sketch book, in square, 6×6 inch format. I brought my etchr field case, with my typical watercolor set up and materials… But I added in my newly inked fude nib fountain pen, and some water brushes loaded up with black ink for monochrome paintings. In there I had my 10×10 cm, 100% cotton, potentate sketchbook. Then I had FOMO and brought also some 6 shiny half pan of paints from blue pine arts in a small tin that I kept outside the field case (because the field case is too full!) Then I had my pen sketch stuff. My 3 pilot coleto pens filled with fancy refills. A uniball air. And a cheap fineliner from M+G, together with the 8×8 cm, 100% cellulose sketchbook. AKA the one I’ve been using for my quick human sketches.

What did I use? I did ONE sketch (one sided) of a random neighbourhood shop in Kyoto, when I wandered out of the airbnb one morning. I used my watercolors that one time.

I did two ink sketches, one with the uniball air, and one with the fude fountain pen, in Arashiyama. That was done in the 10x10cm sketchbook. I just stood by the street and did the quick sketches… While mum and sister were shopping. I didn’t have much time at all. Oh, and I totally did not check on my fountain pens after landing and all… It leaked a little, and wouldn’t have been a problem at all if I’d been cautious. But I just forgot about the air travel being a problem and got ink all over my fingers because I didn’t even check if it leaked. Turns out it did, just a little. But enough to stain my fingers. No ink pouring out or anything dramatic though. Spent as much time cleaning the ink as I did the single sketch… Lol.

Speaking of fountain pens. I still have not checked on the pilot SEF falcon I brought there. It’s still in my etchr field case. I didn’t use it in Japan, and I haven’t used it back in Sg. Lol.

On a side note, I also did bring my very expensive monoc nib, schon dsgn fountain pen over to Japan. It didn’t leak one bit and I used it to journal everyday. The seal on that pen is just that good… I guess that was why I was so relaxed with the fude perhaps. That and I’ve travelled with FPs so many times already and it has never been too much of a problem. Oh yes. I basically finished the ink in that fountain pen… It was getting dry on the last day… Which was just as well. I didn’t bring any extra ink so it worked out perfectly. (Not that I was really worried, I brought so many other pens there, and I also bought stationery and pens in Japan.)

So… How about my pen sketching set? Turns out that was very widely used. I used the uniball air and the m+g fineliner (that fineliner just feels so good on paper, and it’s soooo cheap too, like 2 for less than 3 bucks, and it came with a free white ink pen too for highlights.) And I just did my usual quick human sketches on the trains and subways and buses in Japan… It was fun drawing something different – everyone was obviously in winter clothing. And I think I did a pretty good job of sketching the puffy winter jackets if I can say so myself. I was pleased to find that the skills were transferable. And boy did I sketch lots. I used up just over half of my sketchbook in Japan. And I only started sketching a few days into the trip, and not always. It’s like you have to google maps the location, make sure the whole family knows when to get off etc… So I just didn’t have the spare capacity the first few days… Only later on when everyone was much more used to traveling there.

There were more days in Kyoto where we left the house really late, so I totally could have gone out to sketch in the morning. But what did I do? I just went back to sleep… Yeah… I was tired. And as fun as urban sketching is… I decided to just, rest more and have more energy for the day ahead. Age is catching up to me lol. The mornings would have been the time to get those watercolor sketches in… Yeah. Maybe next time.

Other than that… It’s just too crowded really. Especially at places like the kinkakuji. Would have been nice to paint the golden temple, but it’s also just impossible with the crowd. Oh wells. That said, I took tons of photos, and also bought a goshuin book and got it stamped… And I plan to sketch/paint in the rest of the blank page. And there’s a ton of blank pages. The next time I go to Japan? I’ll just buy another pretty goshuin book. No biggie. Fill up this goshuin book is gonna take a while though… I need more space on my desk, gotta plan it more nicely etc…. And it’ll be the first time I use an accordion book for anything.

So in reality… I could have just gone there with my 8x8cm sketchbook (so convenient when you can just keep it in your pocket moments before you are due to get off the train!), and a uniball air and the fineliner. Oh I did try to use the pilot coleto once while we were waiting for the food. I did change a few colors. Then the food came and I never finished the sketch. Oh wells. But now I know. Just some monotone sketches will do. And then if I’m really worried I can bring a new sketchbook of the same as a spare I guess. Or maybe the slightly bigger one… But unless it’s a trip explicitly for doing art… If not there’s no time really…

I did take plenty of photos of course, and I will definitely use some of those as references in the future. And the trees… I did look at them quite carefully as well as take plenty of tree photos. Now that I’ve dabbled in drawing humans, next up is drawing trees I guess?

So that’s it for the art side of my Japan trip. Till the next holiday trip I guess?

2024 goals check in

I had laid out 6 goals this year… Let’s see how we have done.

General resolutions:

1) Keep email unread count low. I’ve been doing well on this one, mostly. Unread mail is a bit much at 234 now, but you have to forgive me… We have been on a 9 day holiday trip in Japan and just got back yesterday… But even then it’s been typically 200 unread mails and below. Of course I’ve also unsubscribed to plenty of mail that I don’t want to read anymore… But still… So many mails…

2) Finish a khadi fatbook. Done that, and started on a second fat book.

3) Finish the nerdforge sketchbook. Not done unfortunately. Made a big dent on that sketchbook, but just didn’t use it much in favor of the many other sketchbooks that I have finished.

4) Do art every weekend. Not exactly per say, but I’ve done urban sketches everyday that I have left the house, circumstances permitting. That meant every single day after work, even if it’s some quick train sketches. Somedays if I go out on weekends, I sketch too. But if I’m with the family for example, and there is just no time, then of course I am unable to sketch. Ironically I haven’t been doing art that much on weekends anymore, especially in the days when I did long watercolor urban sketches everyday after work… Because I felt that I was all arted out on weekdays already.

5) Use the happy mail dot cards from sketches.n.scrubs. This I have absolutely not kept up with. Because I stopped doing as much art on weekends… For a few months I just stopped opening the happy mail because I just didn’t have the time/energy to swatch it etc…

6) Tidy up desk space – this I’m pretty proud of, I cleared away all the stuff on my chair, and cleared some space on my desk… Although that is not true at the moment because of all the goodies I have from my Japan trip that is piled up on the chair. I didn’t buy all that much this trip. But there is still some stuff nonetheless, and I have yet to open them all, much less put them away properly.

7) Write more… Can’t say I did much of that…

8) Read more…. Didn’t do that well on that front either. I mean, I finished a few webnovels. But ‘proper’ books? Nope.

9) Use my art supplies more. Unfortunately, didn’t do well on this front in terms of the variety of art supplies I was using either. I just stuck to the same old watercolors. Still have a ton of color pencils, brand new in box, sitting inside my cupboard, unused…

So that’s it for my end of the year check in… next year’s goals? I’d say it doesn’t really change much… But that’s for another post…

Sketchbooks!

It’s funny when I look back at my new year’s resolution for the year and it was to finish a sketchbook, or two.

And look what I have now. Four sketchbooks that I finished so far! Granted I was thinking of finishing the Khadi fatbook and the “Make stuff with stories” sketchbook from Nerdforge… And boy is that nerdforge sketchbook thick! (And also, not exactly a fan of that paper…)

But yeah. I have finished a whooping 5 sketchbooks so far! Granted they are mostly tiny ones. But 1x Khadi fat book. 2x small 10×10 cm sketchbook for urban sketching. And 2x tiny 8×8 cm sketchbook for quick human urban sketches. And one of the 8×8 sketchbooks uses thinner, cellulose paper and thus has a ton of pages too. My ‘current’ 10×10 cm urban sketching sketchbook is nearly finished too, but I haven’t been using it at all lately in favor of just doing the quick human ink sketches. I’ve also got a portrait Potentate 100% cotton sketchbook going on, and still used a bit of the Nerdforge sketchbook every now and then… Started using the square format Etchr everyday sketchbook… Using a portait, A6 (ish) sized sketchbook for ink drawings… And also started a new khadi fatbook. And of course, I have another 8×8 cm tiny sketchbook that is in use for quick ink sketches.

This is the year of the sketchbooks and I’m so gonna finish AT LEAST another 2 sketchbooks this year!

The state of life

Every time I come to this blog, I’m kind of in shock at how time flies.

I’d *just* switched hosting sites and paid big bucks for like… 2 years of web hosting? And stay tuned because I have plans to actually add pages to this site, and share my swatches and urban sketching palettes all in a page.

But… It’s been over a month since I switched things over and I just haven’t gotten round to anything yet.

Between work, weekdaily urban sketching, medical appointments, and interns…

It’s madness, really.

I’ve got new interns to take care of too…. Sigh. Again.

And these two interns aren’t the brightest. Maybe the language barrier is an issue too. Sigh.

Anyway. I am on holiday in Malaysia… Road trip with my parents. Because I said fuck work and took two days off. Partly at the cost of earlier in the week though, having to slog it at work even after the medical appointments in the morning when I could actually have taken the day off. I had MC on Wednesday even but… I ended up having to rush work left and right from after lunch, till 7pm. Sigh.

Trip so far has been ok. Lots of happenings. First day and parents both got food poisoning. No idea what we ate… I was kinda bloated but spared. Then today dad’s credit card got hacked…. Nothing serious and the bank picked up the fraudulent transactions and blocked the card, but still, more drama than we needed on what was supposed to be a peaceful, relaxing, lunch at the cafe in the forest. The cafe is at the foot of a hill and is literally called Hill & Heal. What a place to be receiving an SMS about your credit card being blocked…

So… This trip dad was like “bring your art stuff to draw”. So I did. I also packed a sketchbook for him and mum. First day, it was really hot in the afternoon and all, and I didn’t bring my sketching stuff out. All afternoon dad was saying that I should have brought it along, this would look nice sketched, etc etc. Then in the evening came the food poisoning….

Thankfully they are both much better today. And I ended up doing FOUR! Sketches today! And dad joined in too. Heck. He grabbed a sketchbook, a pencil and a pen from me and carried it along in his little pouch. And he just whips it out and starts sketching before me. And at night at the night market he kept asking if I wanted to sketch too. But it was so ridiculously crowded… I said no. 4 sketches in a day is good enough for me. We are here till Sunday (probably just heading back to SG after breakfast), so there’s still tomorrow! Oh yeah. We were at Kluang yesterday till this afternoon, and now in Malacca… So yeah. All 4 sketches were done in Kluang… Getting all the Kluang action in. But tomorrow! I will be able to get some Malacca action in for sure!

Follow themessydeskxyz on Cara if you want to get in on the action. Though I’ve yet to post the sketches from this trip. There’s so many! And the internet here has been a little spotty. Some messages just refuse to go through on discord! This hotel WIFI is pretty decent though, thankfully. Alright. I guess I’ll this post here, and get ready to sleep. Night night!

We have moved!

What?

Yeah, site hosting is finally complete. You wouldn’t notice a single thing. But under the hood things have changed. I moved to a different web hosting provider, and on a cheaper plan since, I just don’t need such an expensive plan for a hobby site anyway. Heck. Even a free blog will do at the moment really. But it’s all done now. Save myself a couple of hundred bucks… Web hosting prices have certainly gone up over the years… Together with energy prices I guess? The war and all….

Anyway, that means more money for art supplies I guess?

And maybe I’ll put up a proper About page and everything soon. But for now I’d better get going to work!

How time flies!

It’s feels like I’d JUST made a special effort to post here, talking about my move to using Cara, doing weekdaily art sketches… And treating Cara as a mini blog… Well. It’s now Aug.

I’ve not stopped… Still doing those week daily sketches, though I’m not exactly always motivated. But it still gets done anyway and I guess that’s what matters.

I’m just sitting around in a stall today… Finally had the medical appointment that I’ve been waiting for since like… 4 months ago. Got some fancy and expensive inhalers…. And things just ended up taking much longer than expected, as usual. Just finished my lunch and a work call, and now I’m free for the day to sketch!

Only that I am feeling tired and uninspired again…. What’s new geez.

I packed new supplies to bring out today. Panned out all my shiny holbein gouache (like literally the golds, silvers, and bronze paints) into a tiny palette. It isn’t fully dry yet and made a big mess on the lid but yeah ok… Gotta let it dry more tonight. I also bought my new shinhan gouache set out… Which I may or may not use…. Idk how I feel about urban sketching with gouache… But I guess the only right answer is to give it a try….

I’ve also been wanting to put together like a granulating palette for outside use, and the urban watercolor LE set by schmincke really was the nail in the coffin for me. I just wanted to use those colors outside, in a sketch and wash sort of style. So yeah. I put a couple of half pans together in a little palette, 12 colors. Yeah it’s a much bigger foot print than my usual tiny 3d printed palette but meh. All good I think. I just have a crap ton of palettes with me now, and a very heavy JustGoSketching bag with all the supplies… And oh yeah I bought my ipad along too.

Which is why I’m writing this post. I have to use my iPad now that I’ve lugged it out right?

So yeah….

Gah. I feel like I’m not fully making sense now. Tired. Brain never quite really woke up today I think… Meh. I’ll think I’ll change spots… Either look for someplace with drinks (hopefully not too expensive), or with something sketch worthy. Idk. I bought out my larger, A5 Potentate sketchbook today. Partly why I switched to the JustGoSketching. That can fit a bigger sketchbook. Hmm yeah. That’s all for now. Till next time!
